Hypoxis aurea Lour (Hypoxidaceae) is a tiny herb producing small but beautiful yellow flowers during summer. Leaves are similar to grasses.
. No need to confuse with Gagea elegans (syn. of Gagea lutea), which has single leaf per plant, scape is not long hairy, and more importantly ovary is superior. Hypoxis aurea has more than one leaves at base, leaves and scape are long hairy and you can see inferior ovary below the perianth;

  Kalatope id al070111 .. Lily Family??: This plant is starting to bloom right now.. BUT a similar plant was seen at a higher altitude (2900 mts) in the month of April… which I had thought to be ‘Gagea elegans’.. NOW I’m confused… Location Kalatope No need to confuse with Gagea elegans, which has single leaf per plant, scape is not long hairy, and more importantly ovary is superior.

Hypoxis aurea Lour (Hypoxidaceae) is a tiny herb producing small but beautiful yellow flowers during summer. Leaves are similar to grasses. It commonly occur in pine forests of Uttarakhand.

Hypoxis aurea ABJUN01/11 : 1 post by 1 author. 2 images. I found a lone plant yesterday on my walk. I had seen some last year too and had identified them as Hypoxis aurea. Since the flower here is on a stalk longer than the leaves, I have doubts whether I am identifying it correctly. Please advise.

height:tiny,9″ very difficult to id by this photo, but still i guess that it may be Hypoxis aurea.. its common in Mulshi, Pune. Please try upload pictures of leaves and habit of the plant for better learning and id the plant with confidence. Just flowers may always create doubts and resulted in assumptions rather than confirmation of the id.

This yellow flower, having a corolla just 2 cm across, pedicel about 5 cm long, corolla of 6 petals, 3 stamens with distinct anthers and leaves like blades of grass, was to be seen everywhere in Malshej. Could anyone throw light on its identity please? there is also a white variety of it? I have similarlooking in my garden, but will have to wait till april / may next year. Searching in Wikipedia, I could not find Hypoxis aurea listed, although I came across 13 sps of the genus. One of the common names mentioned for the genus was Yellow Star-grass. Flowers are presumably yellow. The name ‘ grass ‘ is a misnomer, since the flower is unlike a grass, but lily-like in family hypoxidaceae, sometimes being included in Amaryllidaceae family or the Liliaceae family.
