the fruit of L. parviflora [Nana], they look like peanuts and are 12 – 18 mm long, whereas here in L. lanceolata [Bhondara], as you know, they look like ‘acorns’ and are usually 2-3 by 1-2cms.
Also from my records over the last few years, Bhondara flowers now [from Apr -Jun] and fruits from Aug -Dec,

As per efi thread :
The leaves of what cook calls parviflora are indeed more lanceolate than those of what he calls lanceolata. Which one is the posted one ?

This is Lagerstroemia parviflora and not L. lanceolata

Yes I agree with …, it is Lagerstroemia parviflora of Lythraceae family. Glaucous (beneath) leaves (reyish/ bluish colour of leaves) is a key character.

As I had stated previously, the tree in question here is Lagerstroemia lanceolata [L.microcarpa] locally called Seena / Bhondara.
The photographs are not clear enough to comment on the colour / texture of the leaves. However the leaves are clearly lanceolate and the fruit capsules [seen in the second photograph] are large [about 2-3 by 1-2 cms].
The confusion may have arisen because you both are following Cooke’s classification. I have written about this and it is available at this link : efi thread
My previous photographs of L.parviflora [Nana] are also available in the archives of this site, but I will send a few more of my recent photographs in a separate mail for comparison.

What you are saying could be correct. The leaves of what cook calls parviflora are indeed more lanceolate than those of what he calls lanceolata. However L. lanceolata was previously called L.microcarpa (tiny fruits) so the size of the fruit of this plant matches L. parviflora better (2-3 cm as against 1-1.5 cm) than L.  lanceolata (L. microcarpa)     That being said, I would still urge you and also others to validate Dr. Almeida’s assertion and not just take his word for it.

Lagerstroemias :  3 posts by 2 authors.
Had previously written [and this was widely accepted]:

1st June 2009

Hi …,
The way I see it:
1. Lagerstroemia flos-regina / L.regina / L.speciosa called the ‘Queen’s Flower’ is locally called Taman / Jarul / [Motha Bhondara].
2. Lagerstroemia parviflora is locally called Bhondara / Seena.
3. Lagerstroemia lanceolata / L.microcarpa called ‘Stripping Lady’ is locally called Nana.
Have all these trees at my farm at Shahapur. Have previously posted photographs of these on this site or on wildflowersofindia in my discussions with Pat and Bindu. Could possibly send them again S.O.S.

Now know that this is wrong.

Dr.Almeida visited my farm on the 11th of October 2009. According to him Cooke erred in transposing the names of L.parviflora [Nana] and L.lanceolata [Seena / Bhondara] and “most authors have been following this blindly”. In fact, Cooke in his ‘ Flora of Bombay ‘ Vol 1 [page 546] has made this statement “Dalzell & Gibson [Bom. Fl. 1. c.] have transposed the names of L.lanceolata and L. parviflora”.

Dr. Almeida explained – in Bhondara / Seena the leaves are long and lanceolate – hence he has in his book ‘Flora of Maharashtra’, Vol 2 [pages 284- 285] reverted to the original names.

Therefore, would like to amend my aforementioned classification thus:

1. Lagerstroemia flos-regina / L.regina / L.speciosa called the ‘Queen’s Flower’ is locally called Taman / Jarul / [Motha Bhondara].
2. Lagerstroemia lanceolata [L.microcarpa] is locally called
Bhondara / Seena.
3. Lagerstroemia parviflora called ‘Stripping Lady’ is locally called Nana.

Had also written [and this is revelant here]:

30th March 2010.

Hi …,
A thought occured to me – in case you have not seen the fruit of L. parviflora [Nana], they look like peanuts and are 12 – 18 mm long, whereas here in L. lanceolata [Bhondara], as you know, they look like ‘acorns’ and are usually 2-3 by 1-2cms.
Also from my records over the last few years, Bhondara flowers now [from Apr -Jun] and fruits from Aug -Dec, whereas Nana flowers in Aug and friuts from Aug -Dec.
Will try and send a comparative photograph of the fruit when I get back from Eaglenest.

Will be resending my previously posted photographs of L.parviflora & L.lanceolata now correctly labelled in my next 2 mails.

The classification is from one of the 5 volumes of Dr. Almeida’s “Flora of Maharashtra”, printed by Orient Press, Bombay. They are available at the Botany Department of St.Xavier’s College, Bombay.

Is this Diospyros by any chance?

It looks like dry dehiscent fruits, if so, chances are less for species of Diospyros.
Any chance for a Lytheraceae species?

This is Seena /Bhondara [Lagerstroemia lanceolata]- acc. to Dr.Almeida’s classification. Please check the archives of this group for my photographs of this.

Thanks for the id. I had seen many of these trees with fruits which were being relished by the Parakeets, this was the only tree flowering.

It blooms around Pantnagar in May.

Here are more pictures of the fruits.

To me according to Dr.Almeida’s classification [and we have had plenty of discussions on this in this forum] this is Lagerstroemia lanceolata. Please check these links :

Don’t want to get into any more discussions on this, but am only send this link to showcase the fruit :
Google Groups

Thanks for the additional information.
These trees were quite common inside the Corbett area, only they were not flowering, so the one with flowers looked different & got me confused.
The ones seen commonly were identified by our guide as Lagerstroemia parviflora only, local names given were Dhawda, Dhawdi, Bakuli.

Here are the differences from previous threads:
The fruit of L. parviflora [Nana], they look like peanuts and are 12 – 18 mm long, whereas here in L. lanceolata [Bhondara], as you know, they look like ‘acorns’ and are usually 2-3 by 1-2cms.

However L. lanceolata was previously called L.microcarpa (tiny fruits) so the size of the fruit of this plant matches L. parviflora better (2-3 cm as against 1-1.5 cm) than L. lanceolata (L. microcarpa);
As per efi thread:
In Lagerstroemia parviflora Roxb., the bark is peeling …
And in L. lanceolata the bark is rough, with exfoliations.. But may not peel off .. ;

I am confused with images at Acrocarpus fraxinifolius Arn.

In the absence of flower or fruit it is difficult to identify correctly; based on the bark, leaf  I guessed it.

Lagaerstromia parviflora

Yes, leaves appear to match with images at Lagerstroemia parviflora
I feel the trunk in the foreground may be of some other tree.
In the 2nd image, the trunk in the background may be of this species, from which leaves may be arising.

Another tree is Cochlospermum religiousum.
But both the trees had fallen for a normal rain.

Thanks …
As a layman i can’t differentiate between these two species. I never knew that Lagerstroemia is deciduous.
In fact i had clicked one more tree in Nagzira which was full of foliage and thought it resembled Lagerstroemia. Although the picture quality is not so good, posting the same. Attachments (1)
