Wild Plant for ID : Jijamata Udyan,Mumbai : 251012 : AK-2:
A wild plant seen in Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai on 15/8/2011 & 17/8/2011.
I was earlier thinking it to be Acalypha indica but this seems to be something else.

Looks like Laportea interrupta to me.

… looks like Laportea interrupta (family Urticaceae) to me too.

Attached images are Laportea interrupta (L.) Chew. collected from  Kamrup district (Metro).
Date :17.07.2013
Location: Kamrup district(Metro), Assam
Family : Urticaceae
Genus & species: Laportea interrupta (L.) Chew
Vern. Name : Dam-chorat (Assamese)
Habitat: Grows wild side of the drain
Habit : Herb

A very pleasant coincidence. Today I was trying to find what this plant is; which grows wild in our coconut garden occasionally. Even if it slightly itches the skin on contact; it is used as a leafy vegetable in our place.

Thank you very much …, for the vernacular name dam-chorat.
Will be happy to get the name in native script … *** চোৰাত

I hope I have correctly rendered dam-chorat as ডেমচোৰাত. Please validate.

Requesting to please ID this plant captured in a residential building compound in Mumbai growing wild in the rains in August 2013.
I was given to understand that this may be Acalypha lanceolata

This is Stinging Nettle [Laportea interrupta, previously Fleurya interrupta].

looks like some sp of Boehmeria

Is it Boehmeria nivea???

… may be right. This herb has been identified in the past, I had submitted the pictures and there was quite a long thread.

Friends, how about Urtica dioica?
http://www.rain-tree.com/Plant-Images/nettles-pic.htm

My first reaction was Urtica only, but never seen such stems and leaves in U. dioica or U. parviflora. It could be U. urens as per the following link
http://sauce.pntic.mec.es/ldepablo/images/Urtica-urens.jpg

You are correct. However, there is some difference between the pictures posted by … and the picture in your link. Is there any way in which we can go through my old mails. I had posted an identical picture earlier and it was identified. if we could go through my old mails on eflora site, we could be more clear.
I must admit, you may be right, only I am not fully convinced.

This plant plant was up-loaded as possible Urtica sp.
I had suggested Urtica urtens but after seeing the species U. urens in California and one up-loaded by … from Uttarakhand, the above plant is definitely not U. urens.
The identification is still elusive. Experts can help

It is Laportea interrupta (L.) Chew of Urticaceae. Flowers are not visible here which appear in long, axillary, interrupted pseudo-spikes. Stinging hairs are present on both surfaces of leaves but less irritating than Urtica spp.

Thanks … for finally Resolving it.
Incidentally I had also uploaded this plant from Dakpathar and was identified by …

Many thanks … for the names you provided; somehow I missed noting your response. I stumbled upon it only today, when I am re-compiling names for the posted plant – Laportea interrupta.
I am curious to know of the resource document you referred for these names. Is it an online document ? Will be of great help to me if you give me the web link to it.

26092011GS1 Boehmeria like herb from Dakpathar for ID:
These photographs I had initially mixed up with Boehmeria but is a much more delicate plant about 1 m tall with slender red petioles and small green flowers in loose clusters on an elogated inflorescence, photographed from roadside, growing among shrubs in shaded places, photographed on September 16, 2011

Please refer this previous discussion here regarding *Laportea interrupta*:

Yes Urticaceae member. Produces a bad itch on touching the plant. Has become a widespread weed in Pune too

What about Urtica parviflora which looks quite similar.?

Urtical parviflora is a much different highly stinging leaves and connate stipules. I am uploading separately.

Laportea interrupta (L.) Chew from Hooghly:

The first member mentioned in the “Plant Groups”, under Urticaceae family, is Fleurya interrupta (L.) Gaud. But KEW says it is an unresolved name! While Flora of China and Tropicos state it is synonym of Laportea interrupta (L.) Chew, which in turn is an accepted name of Fleurya interrupta (L.) Wight !

Yes, … I notice its growing very close to an old wall… was it by any chance growing in the mortar between the bricks or wa sit growing in the ground by the wall…
its one of the plants that love lime and need lime to grow … hence the question…
ps I hope you are not touching or handling all these bichhutis by bare hands.. remember what the word bichhuti implies

It was growing in the ground, by the wall and of course there were some unused building materials where i found this herb
Your words, “…love lime…”, explain why i very often find this plant by sides of boundary walls.

This one is for you, recorded on 18th Oct., 2009.
