Wild plant seen near a lake on 12/11/14.
Tiny pink flowers and reddish leaves.

this should be Melochia corchorifolia L.

Thanks a lot for the quick id.
I was quite sure it was from Malvaceae but could not find a match.
I have seen and posted before, the reddish leaves confused me.

Does this come under the family Malvaceae or Sterculiaceae (as in FOI)?

Sterculiaceae as per B&H and Malvaceae as per APG

The plant identified by … is correct and the plant belongs to family Malvaceae

but its also called chocolate weed for nothing

a good point to remember

This valley is remote and no tourists around. Its far far away from main Matheran township.

Please identify this herb. Is it Melochia? It is from Kannur District of Kerala. Altitude : 450 feet approximately…

It looks like Melochia nodiflora

Thanks, ….
But to me it looks different from images of Melochia nodiflora at
Encyclopedia of Life (Specimen)

As images are not matching with Melochia pyramidata also, it is most likely to be Melochia corchorifolia only.

Though I have said that there are differences in both, the characters remain completely the same which I will enumerate further. No two plants can be perfectly same. One has to conclude according to matching characters which you also agree.
The characters for the said plant which I checked from BSI flora are as follows. Some characters which can’t be seen but I know because I have seen the plant.(Esp. regarding sizes which can’t be shown here)
Herbs upto 1m tall…..Fitting.
Leaves 2.5-6.3bye 0.6-4.0cm, ovate oblong sometimes obscurely 3 lobed…..fitting.
glabrous or with a few scattered stellate hairs, apex acute, base acute obtuse or truncate….fitting
Margins serrate…fitting.
Flowers 1cm across ….fitting. in terminal densely crowded clusters….fitting perfectly.
Capsule depressed, globose, hispid(Covered with stiff hair;bristly)…fitting
Seeds angled,mottled black grey……Not seen here…(Limitation).

Still I may be completely wrong in identifying my plant.
You said the differences are major.
If you can tell me the differences in characters please let me know so that I can study further. Or if there is a scenario that you know of any other plant with above listed characters which may be possible please let me know so that I can check my notes again.
Incidently myself and … are also medical doctors who will not come to diagnosis only from the gross features.

The plant posted by … and the one posted by … (link provided by …) are the same species.
This species is distributed widely and place to place it shows variations in color, leaf shape and etc. Sometimes huge variations such as cordate to round leaf base in some places, the leaves are slightly lobed as well.

Agree with Melochia corchorifolia. Still wd like to see habit and leaves

Yes, it’s Malvaceae family member (Melochia corchorifolia) only.
…, not belongs to Primulaceae why because of petals free clearly, when it belongs Primulaceae they must have petals fused and a long tube,

Yes sir !

I have seen it on hikes in SE USA. supposed to be a medicinal plant in Malayasia. considered a weed in USa and you found it in Nepal. I am intrigued. is it widespread where you found it? I wonder if we see it in India?

Widespread in Gujarat , Maharashtra and Southern states too !

Tamilnadu has more than one species of Melochia.

Not too many population at one location rather scant distribution.
