Mesua ferrea:
Mesua ferrea  Nag Kesar  नाग केशर
Family : Clusiaceae
Observed flowering in Rani Bag Mumbai on 27th Feb 2011.

–  Mesua ferrea L. now belongs to a new family Calophyllaceae which was earlier considered as a tribe of family Clusiaceae.

Iron wood tree!!

It produced one of the strongest and heaviest woods in the world
National tree of Sri Lanka

– Here is one more confusing common name!

Mesua ferrea is well known as Nagkesar or Nagchapha.  The plant is known as an important medicinal plants, particularly the flowers.
However there is a spice used in many Indian recipes described as Nagkesar.  This cannot be Mesua ferrea. This spice Nagkesar (used in Goda Masala of Maharashtrian recipes) looks like cloves and some describe it as flower buds (dry) of Cinnamom.
Since one Nagkesar (Mesua ferrea) is used in Ayurvedic medicines and the other Nagkesar (Cinnamom?) as a spice in Indian recipes it is likely create confusion / problems during its usage. Some time ago a friend of mine bought Nagkesar (Cinnamom) and tried to use it as Ayurvedic medicine!  Luckily a senior vaidya told him that it was not true Nagkesar (Mesua ferrea) and would not be effective.
This needs clarification.  Can someone throw more light on this?

– this specific plant is called Nagchafain our konkan region vernacular names differ in different parts of country like for ex Brahma kamal for us is Epiphyllum oxypetalum while Brahma kamal in valley of flowers is Saussurea obovallata.. so to avoid this confusion either you should know all vernacular names of the plant or single botanical name…choice is yours:):)

NAAG-KESAR:
If you have visited Assam, you must have seen a tree known as IRON WOOD OF ASSAM in English( Nohar in Assamese, Naag-kesar in Bangla, scientifically it is known as Mesua Frrea ). At this time of the year the tree is conspicuous, with bunches of white fragrant flowers. I am sending an image of this flower with bees having feast on it. You may like it.

–  I have not visited Assam, however, here is some information on the tree.

very nice, …
How many books did you end up collating this from, just a rhetorical question, because I know this needed
exhaustive searches and looking up.
This kind of list for one tree goes to show how diverse our culture// languages and usage is and how a binomial is so very useful to idying a tree esp. if it has medicinal value and uses … only the correct item is used in the pharmacology.

Thanks… For this plant, I referred 30 sites.
I do have few books, but I did not refer them this time. The need arises when not much of the plant is discussed on internet.
The important medicinal plants of our country are well covered on internet; and these are the ones that would have several names in Sanskrit and regional languages. Popular Sanskrit names are used in other languages, often spoken using accent of local language, thus having shift in their pronunciation and spelling.
