Wild Herb captured on 13/8/10 during the trek from Ghangaria (around 11,000 ft.) to Hemkunt Sahib (around 14000 ft.).

The first red flower is not Potentilla rather it is Geum elatum Wall. ex G. Don, ; Gen. Syst. 2: 526 (1832).

First post is of Potentilla atrosanguinea.

Real mix up

First two Geum elatum

next two Potentilla atrosanguinea
Next two (white flowers) Fragraria nubicola

My id was for the first four pics which still seems to me as Potentilla atrosanguinea. Cant speak of Geum without leaves.
Next two pics are Fragaria sp.

Bot. name: Potentilla atrosanguinea

VoF Week – Potentilla astranguinea:

Potentilla astranguinea

Place : Valley of Flowers

Date : 14.08.2012

DV :: 02 AUG 12 – 0825 :: red ¿ Potentilla ? at Valley of Flowers:  2 AUG 12
Valley of Flowersabout 11000 – 12000 ft
Habitat: sloping meadow
Habit: erect herb about 75 cm high, flower 20 – 25 mm across

It could be Potentilla atrosanguinea.

Most likely Potentilla argyrophylla var. atrosanguinea (if leaves have 3 leaflets)
Geum elatum also has similar flowers which are yellow or sometimes red. Leaves are different there.

Perhaps lower leaves have to be investigated. The leaves seen look much different from larger, silky, cut leaflets of atrosanguinea.

…, the last picture is the only photo showing long shot.
The original sized picture can be viewed at Flickr though I am afraid it covers lower leaves.
Apologies for not covering the basal leaves – perhaps due to intent of covering more distance and more plants.

I thought it as Potentilla atrosanguinea.
Can’t say anything more as the discussion has reached beyond my knowledge

Just to complete…Obviously Family Rosaceae
