I saw the tree at Yellagiris in Tamil Nadu. Am I right in presuming that it is a Solanum sp. ?
Height 20-25ft Flowers around 6cm across. Did not see any fruits.

Large blue flowers, tree, prickles only on stem not leaves, I think S. wrightii.
Please watch, older flowers should be turning paler and finally white.

– I also think this is Solanum wrightii or commonly known as Potato tree.
Kindly see the link below you will find the colour changing phenomenon of the flowers evident in photos. http://toptropicals.com/SOLANUM_MACRANTHUM.htm

Solanaceae Week- Solanum macrophyllum.:
Here are my pics of the Potato Tree seen on a street in Bangalore.
Unfortunately this tree is not seen in Chennai. Is the climate not conducive
to its flowering here, I wonder.

Potato tree is not S. macrophyllum (a very confused name now considered as synonym of S. albidum). This one should be S. wrightii, uploaded few days earlier by …

I have seen this tree in Chennai in T. Nagar (one of the roads in between Pondy bazaar and GN Chetty road: in a residential house). It does not flower profusely as in Mysore or Bangalore.
Earlier I have posted the pictures of this tree from Mysore city. Please see the link. This tree flowers throughout the year. Now is the flush season. I have a few trees nearby my house in Mysore.

I have seen this tree flowering in Yercaud. I have yet to spot it in Chennai. Will be looking out for it.

i think this is s.xanthocarpon

Solanum macrophyllum -Hart.
Family: SOLANACEAE
Origin: Mexico
Bangalore

Slightly better photographs of the same plant (leaf, stem & prickles in particular) on a different date.

Young flowers are purple in color and they later turn/fade to white.
Here is an eflora thread on the same

Midrib Prickles …

In spite of the label the tree appears to be Solanum wrightii for several reasons
S. wrightii is characterised by flowers which are initially blue or purple fading to white, large in size. The plant was uploaded by … few days back

There is no published name Solanum macrophyllum Hart. according to KEW Plant List, GRIN, the species is S. macrophyllum Dunal (or Hort. ex Dunal according to IPNI) which is synonym of S. lanceifolium Jacq. or S. albidum Dunal. (KEW Plant List).
Hortus Third, the most comprehensive treatise does not list C. macrophyllum, it, however, lists S. macranthum also having bluish purple flowers fading to white. Some databases treat S. wrightii and S. macranthum as synonyms.

Thanks for the ID validation. Shall we take the correct name as : S. lanceifolium or S. albidum with S. macranthus as synonym?
Please suggest the valid citation, which can be followed by all.
Furthermore, the tree is in full bloom in Mysore also. This is the flush season. The tree is always with flowers. There are many trees nearby my home. I have uploaded the photographs long time back.

Some research has to be done. Perhaps original description of S. macrophyllum and S. albidum Dunal has to be found and then we can compare with the descriptions of S. wrightii and S. macranthum to arrive at formal conclusion. Right now we can’t call it S. macrophyllum.

Solanum wightii is the only tree in the genus known to me. I shared a pic of the same few months back and I think the flower does match with it.

Solanum macranthum photographed from along Chikkamagalur Mullayanagiri Road, Karnataka, 26-9-2015.

Was it cultivated/ planted ?
I am confused between Solanum grandiflorum (Introduced) and Solanum wrightii (Introduced)
Both are really close and considered once as synonyms as per ‘Note’ in POWO.
While S.wrightii (syn: Solanum macranthum Carrière) has been widely introduced as per POWO and CoL, there are only some places mentioned for S.grandiflorum as per POWO and none as per CoL
BSI checklist does not mention S.grandiflorum.
Solanum macranthum Dunal mentioned in some of the posts in efi at Solanum grandiflorum (Introduced) is actually a syn. of Solanum crinitum Lam. as per POWO and CoL.
So I feel our observations at Solanum grandiflorum (Introduced) may be of Solanum wrightii (Introduced) and we have to shift them accordingly.
Pl. give your feedback, if you feel any doubts or have different views.

we have to decide whether our plant is S. macranthum Dunal, now S. crinitum Lam. (branches lack thin straight prickles, corolla shallowly lobed) or S. macranthum Carr., now wrightii Benth. (branches with long straight prickles, corolla deeply lobed) please see images on POWO
I think ours should be S. crinitum Lam.

I think we have to find an authentic description of S. macranthum Dunal, now S. crinitum Lam. (I am unable to locate one on the net) and differences between the two, based on these.

S. wrightii as per BSI checklist BSI
