Commelinales and Zingiberales Week: Commelinaceae, Tradescantia fluminensis from Kashmir: Commelinales and Zingiberales Week: Commelinaceae, Tradescantia fluminensis Vell. Fl. Flumin. 3: 140, t. 152 1829.
Ornamental perennial herb with white flowers, photographed from Kashmir,
often grown in beds or flower pots.

Has cultivars with green leaves as variegated leaves.

– is both the photos from the same plant? I was wondering about the leaf variation

– perhaps an example of somatic inheritance. Similar case is also met in the variegated cultivars of Hibiscus rosasinensis, where you may buy a wholly variegated cultivar and if are not careful in removing odd green
(leaved) branches, the whole buch may soon become green without any variegated  leaves.

do you have any more pictures of this plant? For a proper identification I would need to see the indumentum of the sepals, a side-view of the inflorescence and detail of the indumentum of the leaves.

The sepal indumentum is not very clear, but I believe that the first plant is indeed T. fluminensis. The second one would require more photos of the sepals, inflorescence and habit.

Flora-Australia-14: A weed-Tradescanthia albiflora– locally calleda wandering jew.

Good to see a different Commelinaceae member. Little correction …. It has to be Tradescantia albiflora.

Tradescantia albiflora is a synonym of T. fluminensis.

yes trailing white version of the purple wondering jew. makes a nice hanging basket if one plants several in one basket

What a peculiar name! Any idea how it came about. I think we also have the purple variety…

look up wiki
being sensitive and having lots of jewish friends i dont like the name
but most of the gardening books i have or seen/read carry the name and it has stuck in my memory
one is that one of tradescantia flower looks as if its mosses in a cradle. very romantic version of the story
try making a hanging basket with your children
would love to see the results
you can even over winter it in the some in a sunny window

This is the most typical form of Tradescantia fluminensis. It is almost identycal to the ones growing naturally in my backyard, here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Tradescantia fluminensis variegata

Thanks for the correct id.

Do you have more pictures of the indumentum of the sepals? This could be another species from section Austrotradescantia.

Thank you for you interest shown in my plant. I’m sorry that’s the only clear picture I have.
There is one more, in which the plant can be seen partly…. attaching it.
Haven’t visited this nursery for a while. When I do visit again, will remember to look up this particular plant.

the photo you just sent is not of the same plant. It is Tradescantia spathacea in one of its variegated cultivars.

Sorry it was not the right plant.
Will remember to check the plant when I revisit the place.

This should beTradescantiafluminensis Vell.
