my favorite..
natural aspirin…
people should plant one or two in the little space they may have… I had one in calcutta….
something heavy was leaning against it when hurricane Aila hit at 120 miles an hours winds and killed it…
now I have to replant one.. just a handful of leaves boiled into a tea will act to reduce fever in jiffy, and
a couple of handful of leaves simmered in a half cup sesame or mustard oil with a little camphor added after cooling will make a nice massage oil for osteoarthritis… the latter also need weight loss, dietary restrictions, muscle strengthening exercise etc… of course.

Requesting identification of this potted plant at a private housing society at Pune with tiny blue flowers. With the naked eye I could barely see some blue colors. I do not know how to describe these flowers. ht about 1.5 feet

Vitex trifolia ?

Many Thanks …  for the Id. The plant looks exactly the same

Attaching close up pictures of leaves and flowers. the leaves look grayish underneath. the petiolule of the central leaflet is 1.3 cm long

Could this be Vitex negundo as the central leaflet is not sessile. Id help my recent post

20/07/2013 Pune Bibwewadi road
requesting identification of a small road side tree

This could be V.negundo or V.trifolia. The closer possibility is that of V.negundo. The identification key is on the leaves.
In case of Vitex trifolia, the leaflets are sessile. A better image of leaves, can confirm the identity of the plant. The sessile leaflets are seen in the link posted by you.
Am attaching the image of Vitex trifolia from my collection.
Apart from this, V.trifolia grows naturally along the coast – it is a littoral species.

I have managed to get a better image of the leaves. attaching pix of the same. the leaves do not appear to be sessile so should we say that this plant is Vitex negundo as suggested by you. Many thanks for your help and the pix from your collection of Vitex trifolia which helped me to understand the difference between the two better

Should be Vitex negundo.

Vitex negundo L. … (family: Lamiaceae; also placed in: Verbenaceae)
these white coloured negundo flowers were a kind of change for me. I am familiar with the pale blue, lilac OR muave coloured ones which are common in Konkan and Sahyadri.
The local folks at another place Bhedaghat call this plant besharam (lit. meaning: shameless) because it dominates, and seems to be growing everywhere.

Vitex glabrata, photographed from Herbal Garden Punjabi Bagh, Delhi

I came across this post while searching for images of Vitex glabrata. These pictures look completely different from the ones found at India Biodiversity Portal and TopTropicals websites.
Could these be of Vitex negundo var. purpurascens?! or some other species of Vitex?
It looks like we currently have no other pictures for this species at eFI site.

Thanks … for pointing out. Though my plant is different from above websites, incidentally following websites differ in depiction and more like mine:

Thanks …

To me it seems to be Vitex negundo.

.

IF you can provide me with the traditional name, i can find out with my dad and let you know..

I was just googling and i have see this Vitex Negundo (nalla Vaavili – telugu, karu notchi – tamil). Some one gifted my dad that plant it is violet/ black in color and the leaves are dark violet looking black. and the flowers are also the same.. I also have a normal vitex negundo and they differ very much in color. I have a 120 acre farm 100km from hyderabad where i have it. He also said that it is one of the rarest specie. Can you please guide me on that? I can get some pics next time i go there…

check out the link of vitex negundo black.. I shall post a new topic with better photos with my D90 later… http://www.flickr.com/photos/8384193@N05/

It is Vitex negundo var. purpurescens, called as ‘Karu nochi’ கரு நொச்சி or ‘Oodha nochi’ ஊதா நொச்சி in Tamil.
The name ‘karu nochi’ (a mythical plant) is one of the most popular ‘miracle herbs’ in Siddha, if I am right. Karu nochi is said to be used to convert iron into gold through some unique processes, as written in an old palm-leaf script. And there has been a mad rush in search of this much sought-after plant. There are some smart guys who (mis)used this madness of aspirants and made money by selling this Vitex as ‘Karu nochi’. I was told that a single leaf of the ‘so-called’ karu nochi was sold for Rs. 3000 at Kolli hills of TN.
So far I haven’t heard anyone succeeded in making gold from iron 😉 But, the search is still on, I guess.

as per your post.. do you confirm the pics i posted to be the same Karu Notchi which is being misused to encash the weakness of these gold hunter?

There is a possibility, due to the name and the colour of leaf. Whether it is ‘Karu nochi’ or ‘Sen kathazhai’ (Red Aloe vera), usually the plant material is not shown in full but in small, deformed pieces making id difficult or impossible. And usually some cosmetic work is done to the material to make it appear black or red in these cases. If you come across with someone selling ‘karu nochi’, pl try to post the pictures here for id.

vitex negundo 3 and 5 leaves in HP ( Sameer Rastogi):
Himachal pradesh has vitex negundo plants with whorls of 3 and 5 leaves. are these two different species or one?  Out of these two, Bana (5 leaved), is used in traditional magic healing of Herpes zoster and other skin diseases. it’s surprising that 3 leaved vitex has no place in magic healing at all.

–  I think you are talking about Vitex trifolia, which has trifoliolate leaves. This can easily be mistaken to V. negundo on a casual look, however, the latter species can readily be distinguished by its 5-foliolate leaves.

vitex trifolium is found in western ghats not in himachal. so its definitely not V trifolium.

– Perhaps  the matter could be resolved if photographs of both are uploaded. It is not uncommon to see 3 leaflets in V. negundo, but the inflorescence and shape and sizeof leaflets in the two species are quiet distinct.

Location : Chennai outskirts
Date :17.11.2019
Elevation : 33 mts.

Vitex sp. i like to see the whole specimen, leaves, more of them further down the twig, all the way to a main branch or the stem, if a small plant and the stem, bark etc and seeds// fruits if any

Pl. check comparative images at

As per my observation very close to V.negundo,

100 %  correct …!

Very likely, … i suspect it is but before i convince myself that it is what i suspect it is to need little more data like we say in cancer diagnosis.
close is not good enough and obstetrician also say in pregnancy diagnosis, close is not enough.
Latest Mars mission also taught us, close or almost…  is not good enough. so it should be in botany.
vitex negundo is an important ayurvedic and herbal medicine with extremely versatile properties. proper identification without a doubt is essential
