Soldier’s orchid, Ground orchid;

Here I am attaching fotos of an orchid, collected from lawn in my compound today.

– This has very recently been recorded from Saudi. This should be Zeuxine strateumatica. You are a  proud owner of this orchid as it is supposed to be of very rare occurrence in your area. These are found in moist, open grasslands.

– Yes it does look like Zeuxine strateumatica I have observed this in PMC garden in Pune. Attaching photo

– Yes, all the pics shared by … and … are Zeuxine strateumatica. This is one of the most widespread orchids of the world hence it does show a lot of variation and then there are some more species which looks very much similar and hence poses confusion to us. .. Please find attached some of my pics from Dehradun but last year..

– Thomas, S. 1998. “The advance of  Zeuxine strateumatica, a new record for Saudi Arabia.” Orchid Review 106. (1221): 153-154.

– The advent of this orchid can be with the soil transported (imported?) for the lawn. This happened in a garden in Pune (… pics) where the soil was dug out from the natural habitat of this orchid. The tubers came in with the soil. Amazing, how plants travel!

– but in general orchid seeds are so small that they surely can travel on air especially if they are dispersed during the dry and windy seasons like this one.

This is a small orchid that usually grows in open grasslands which are usually covered with water during rainy seasons.
Note: I would be grateful, if any member notices this orchid anywhere in India and adds information to this thread.

We used to collect it in Delhi in fields along Tuglakabad Fort. Not seen it after I got my DLR.

This plant must be there in the lawns of DU or Red Fort or any other big gardens and even big building lawns.
Try your luck.

very very beautiful flowers indeed…
I am also after this, got some withered flowers of this during my field surveys of Morni Hills, when I was doing my Ph.D… was also common in the grasses of Kurukshetra University Lawns, unfortunately I cannot find this in recent years…hopefully we will find this somewhere in Haryana…

Right time, right place !!! And I am sure you will find it 🙂

Yes … Wondering here and there for this, from where I have collected During my PG Course

Zeuxine strateumatica(L.) Schltr. is one of the common ground orchid in outer Himalaya and adjacent plains. This tinny orchid produce beautiful terminal spike. Known as “Bhuifor”, after spring rains it come up rapidly from underground root system by breaking the soil crust (Bhuifor= breaking the soil).
It is the lone species of orchids found in Pantnagar since the area is devoid of natural stands of vegetation and greatly disturbed.

Wonderful sir. I have seen Zeuxine membranacea too in Uttarakhand but couldnt get time to report it.

Beautiful … Now We have to Search this one and only naturally found Orchid in Haryana, vigorously….

Somehow this orchid is found every where from Hong Kong to India to USA. But it’s not so common.

Plant for ID: Asansol, West Bengal: February 2023: 2 high res. images.
Can you please help me ID this plant photographed in my garden? The plant is almost 4 inches tall and emerges from the ground almost like asparagus. The tip has small flowers which haven’t bloomed yet.
Posting a picture with my hand for reference.
