Antirrhinum orontium L. from Karnal: This is Misopates orontium (L.) Raf. , the lesser Snapdragon or Weasel’s Snout Syn. Antirrhinum orontium L.(Family-Scrophulariaceae, now in Plantaginaceae) photographed from Dyal Singh College, Karnal, in February 2010.

This is a small herb, upto 20 cm in height often found growing along field borders and flower beds as a weed, flowers very small, less than 1cm across. Wish to have additional info.

Very nice upload …
I initially thought that it appears to be from Fabaceae…?
Originally from Europe the plant grows as a weed elsewhere. The flowers are pink on Wikipedia page.
Liked the common name…Weasel’s snout and thought the flower to resemble it. On searching found that the hairy green fruit which developes from the flowers resembles the Weasel’s snout. (Weasel is a small mammal…I have seen it in Spiti valley Himalayas)

Misopates orontium (L.) Raf i think

Yes this should be Antirrhinum orontium as … have put…

nice focus… even tiny hair are visible and the little “droplets on their tips” as I see it…
but white is always difficult to photograph … details get lost when camera tries to average out the background with the white object…

Sir. Thank you very much. I was also concentrating on Antirrhinum orontium (now Misopates orontium), but colour of the flower (pale pink streaked with purple) mentioned in FLORA SIMLENSIS baffled me as my plant was pure white.

Catalogue of life gives three subspecies of Misopates orontium (L.) Raf.
Misopates orontium subsp. orontium does not have any distribution in India, while only Misopates orontium subsp. gibbosum (Wall.) D.A.Sutton has distribution in India.
Checklist of Nepal mentions only Antirrhinumgibbosum Wall. as a syn. of Misopates orontium (L.) Raf.
So our plant in India should be Misopates orontiumsubsp. gibbosum (Wall.) D.A.Sutton as per synonyms herein.
