Mimosaceae tree for identification 191113MK003 : Attachments (10). 5 posts by 2 authors.

Please help me in identifying this common tree found planted as fences and in forestry plantations.
Local name: Parambai
Leaf: 5 cm long
Inflorescence: cream-coloured head of 2 cm diameter
Date: 27 Sep 2013
Habitat: rural and in scrub-forests
Alt.: 300 m asl

It is Acacia mellifera

Acacia mellifera is a prickly acacia with profuse fruiting and very difficut to eradicate if established. Now we are facing difficulty in eradicating it from the botanical garden here. Regeneration capacity also very high. I advice please don’t plant this species near to river or streams. But it is very good species for making greenary in difficult/ problem soils. As it is spiny, it is very difficult to extract even for using it firewood. Mechanical harvest may be tried

Difficult to ID due poor quality of images.

Appears close to Senegalia mellifera (Vahl) Seigler & Ebinger  as per comparative images at Senegalia

I think yes, Senegalia mellifera. Only difference the flowers were white rather than yellow.
I have seen this growing in the garden at Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore.  They also have herbarium specimen of the same.
They said that this was recently introduced from Sudan.
There is nice representation in the eFI website.
