Please help me in identifying this straggler-shrub found in edges of a semi-evergreen forests in Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger reserve.
Hooks present reminded me of Hugonia plant, but the flowers are pinkish in colour here.
Leaf: 10 cm long
Place: Karaiyar Dam, Tirunelveli dist., TN
Date: 06 Oct 2013

Hugonia for sure

even the calyx is different

could it be annonaceae??

Ancistrocladus heyneanus is also hooked climber but there the leaves with  indistinct vein.
Here the veins are distinct, 2 hooks are seen in a twig, It is hugonia only

Hugonia mystax flowers are showy, bright yellow. the flower bud in the phoograph is not opened. But the hooks are clearly indicating the identity.

Tree for ID – Polur – 06022014-NAW2 : Attachments (4 + 1). 6 posts by 3 authors.

Kindly identify this small tree with red spherical fruit with thin flesh which was being eaten by monkeys. Photographed in the reserve forest near the Polur Jamnamathur road, north of Tiruvanamalai, south of Vellore, Tamil Nadu on the 29th Jan 2014.
The seeds are 6-7 mm diameter, a very thin flesh and skin making up for another mm or so in diameter of the fruit.

If you have observed the characteristic hooks on its branchlets, then it should be Hugonia mystax. But more details needed to confirm the id. What is the local Tamil name of the plant?

Thanks for the lead on the hooks – i went thru my pictures again and found one which seems to show some hooks. i attach the picture. the tamil name told to me as per my notes is ‘yalandai’.

looks very much like Hugonia mystax only

Thanks for the additional picture. That confirms the id.
The Tamil name ‘yalandai’ is usually applied to species of Ziziphus.
Hugonia mystax is locally known as ‘modira kanni’ மோதிரக்கண்ணி

Thanks for the clarification on the tamil name – a mistake in my notes.

Found in Vandalur -Perungalathur Mountain forest
Taken in Chennai Tamil Nadu.

Nice photographs. It seems to be Hugonia mystax.

I got surprised that the shrub has a name in Taxonomy.
I don’t have words to thank you.
How did you know it?
I got more puzzled that it had Tamil name also.
The ring shaped structure is the attraction.(In Tamil named mothira kanni accordingly).
I don’t know why there is such a structure.
Still there are at least 50 varieties of trees in vandalur forest, that needs to be identified which are not commonly found along Chennai or Kanchipuram District.
Is there any website where can I find all this unidentified flowers by me?

yes, ….Hugonia only

Thanks, …  Identification of plants is very very difficult. So Pl. Keep taking photos and keep posting. We will try to help you. If you can find local flora books, it may be of some help.

You can refer Pitchandikulam forest Digital Herbarium. It gives lot of information about Tropical Dry Evergreen forest plants.
