Pterospermum diversifolium : Lalbagh,Bangalore : 20AUG15 : AK-39 : 39/391 post by 1 author. Attachments (4)

Adding the two Pterospermums I have come across with smaller flowers.
This was shown by … in Lalbagh.

Couldn’t locate open flowers, only buds seen.

As capsule is not covered with covered with brown tubercles, it is not going to be P. diversifolium as per keys at http://efloraindia.nic.in/efloraindia/taxonList.action?id=3390&type=3

… images from Lalbagh at Request Tree ID 171 – Lalbagh, Bangalore – RA looks to be of Pterospermum xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Santapau & Wagh

Can it be subrifolium?

Yes it looks like Pterocspermum xylocarpum; the pod is 5 angled, rusty brown; seeds orbicular

P xylocarpum.

There is no pod here, only the bud.
Can it be Pterospermum suberifolium as per posts from Lalbagh, Banglore & Banglore ?:

Thank you for sharing, …, the id seems to me to be correct, please wait for experts for validation.

Thanks … I take it that the correct name now is Pterospermum suberifolium?

To me appears close to images at Pterospermum xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Santapau & Wagh

It is Pterospermum canescens Syn. P.suberifolium the pod is oblong, terete, tapering at both ends

It seems in the Pterospermum page under Pterospermum xylocarpum there is mix of species; Pterospermum suberifolium has small flowers when compared to P.xylocarpum(>8cm across)

Thanks, …  I will correct … thread.

May I request you to check up images & threads at Pterospermum xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Santapau & Wagh and out mistakes, if any ?

Bot. name: Pterospermum xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Sant. & Wagh

To me flowers look similar to images at Pterospermum suberifolium rather than those at Pterospermum xylocarpum

yes, to me it appears Pterospermum suberifolium, based on flower and leaf

 /wp-content/uploads/2020/10/P._xylocarpa.jpg

Pterospermum xylocarpum: Pterospermum xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Sant. & Wagh

Small evergreen tree, leaves about 10 cm, white tomentose beneath, obliquely rounded at base. Flowers solitary, axillary on stout peduncle; bracts 3, entire. Flowers 3-5 cm, fragrant; calyx tomentose. Native to Karnataka, planted else where.

Flowering at my house in Pune.

To me flowers look similar to images at Pterospermum suberifolium rather than those at Pterospermum xylocarpum

yes I agree with you; Pterospermum suberifolium

Yes. Pterospermum suberifolium (L.) Willd. is the current accepted name. BSI flora shows P xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Sant. & Wagh as syn while The Plant List shows as unresovled. The plants do not differ.

Thanks, … But BSI Flora does not show any such synonym. Pl. see http://efloraindia.nic.in/efloraindia/taxonList.action?id=3407&type=4

If these are independent sp., then what is the key to differentiate? BSI Flora of Maharashtra does give.

Need your help to ID a shrub : 9 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (3)- around 1 mb each.
the shrub is about 5 ft tall.

Photographed in Mawsynram, Meghalaya. September 2018. only fruiting seen.

May be a Pterospermum sp

i was thinking in the same vein, but i dont see any hairs or fuzz on the leaves. may be its just the way pictures were taken. though there is different colored epidermis on either side of the leaf blade.

though there is fuzz on the fruit/capsule. that i surmised to be five or sic segmented, cant tell.

Sure … The fruit felt dry and hard, pentamerous. The remnants of the flower were still hanging on. Leaves glabrous above, greyish brown below.. Did not cut through the fruit…so do not know how it was inside.. The above info may not be of much help..

thank  you for the recall. yes does not take me nearer to dx

Perhaps Pterospermum acerifolium

efi page on Pterospermum acerifolium

Seems to be Pterospermum acerifolium.

Pterospermum suberifolium Lam.

It doesn’t look like Pterospermum acerifolium.
It could be Pterospermum suberifolium.

Looks like Pterospermum xylocarpum? The flowers look very much like P. xylocaprum flowers.

Pl. see the following for differences & keys:
An Excursion Flora of Central Tamilnadu, India By K. M. Matthew (1995)- Details with Keys
Pterospermum suberifolium LAM. (syn. of Pterospermum canescens ROXB. )
Pterospermum xylocarpum (syn. Pterospermum heyneanum WALL. EX. WIGHT & ARN.)

There is also one Pterospermum suberifolium (L.) Willd.

Thank you all, it seems to be Pterospermum xylocarpum.

Pictures 2859 to 2872 the set with smaller flowers; smooth ovate podded tree is perfect Pterospermum suberifolium (As per Mathew’s Flora of TN and Carnatac, and BSI

I think keys are based on the the fruit/ capsule.
For Pterosprmum suberifolium (L.) Lam., BSI Flora of India (1993) say Capsules 4 – 6 x 2 – 2.5 cm ovoid-oblong or ovoid, terete tapering at both ends, 4 – 5-valved, creamy tomentose outside, while An Excursion Flora of Central Tamilnadu, India By K. M. Matthew (1995) says ovoid, obtusely angled, whitesh.
For Pterospermum xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Santapau & Wagh,  BSI Flora of India (1993) say Capsules 5 – 7.5 x 2 – 3.6 cm, oblong to pyriform, narrowed at both ends, obtusely 5-angled, rusty stellate-tomentose, while An Excursion Flora of Central Tamilnadu, India By K. M. Matthew (1995) says pyriform, acutely angled, rusty.

I think based on this, we should take this post as Pterospermum xylocarpum (Gaertn.) Santapau & Wagh.

The measurements are not here; the capsule is not angled it is not rusty tomentose; the leaf also not matches with P.xylocarpum; the bracts, bracteoles, stipules also have to be considered. A multipronged approach is needed for identification. Hence I can’t agree with your id; I strongly believe it is not Pterospermum xylocarpum

Thanks, … I take it as stated by you.
