The above information is based on studies of last few decades, based on estimates driven from latest techniques and collaboration of thousands of scientists. So there is no reason to contest these estimates unless we have any concrete evidence to the contrary.
To my mind what Hooker and other authors did more than 150 years ago supports and not contradicts present estimates. Bentham and Hooker estimated only 97000 species of seed plants. The number has since already grown to nearly three times of that, meaning nearly 70 % of existing species were not known to them. With great advancement in techniques in last few decades, the present estimates may be realistic.
