Efloraofindia website updated 31th August’11- around 6000 species:

It’s heartening to state again that Efloraofindia is the largest google e-group in the world in this field & the largest nature related e-group (and the most constructive) in India with more than 95,000 messages so far (unprecedented in Indian e-group history with around 18000 messages in past three months only) & membership currently around 1750 nos.

The Efloraofindia website has now been updated upto 31th August’11. It has the largest database on net on Indian Flora with pictures of more than 6000 species. You can see it at any time at /home. Persons, who regularly search for plant species, can add this link in their favorites.

Intent of this website is compilation of all the posts on ‘efloraofindia’ e- group along with providing other details so that it’s useful to all concerned as all the data about a particular species will be available under a single head & easily searchable. However, correctness of data/ identification in the efloraindia (earlier indiantreepix) links is dependent on the members’ inputs in that particular link. Therefore, errors/ mistakes cannot be ruled out- everyone is requested to point them out for corrections by sending an e-mail to <itpmods@googlegroups.com>. Efloraindia e-group members can add comments about it after ‘signing in’ at the bottom of the page.

What is more important is that thousands of observations of hundreds of our members (many of which one will not find documented anywhere) are available here & easily searchable through general web searches as well as search in the efloraofindia. And these are going to increase with every passing day. These original observations will be a treasure trove & will a delight to lot of people.

With the pace at which new species are being added to our database, it should become the premier resource for taxonomic research in India. As the data is multiplying, we need more volunteers to take up this work. Details can be seen at /volunteers-required/volunteers-required

Kudos to the moderators, experts & other members who are rendering selfless service on the group!

I thank all the moderators, experts & members, who have made this endeavor possible for the benefit of everyone.

Great going … Congratulations to all.

At the same time I would request moderators and interested members to come forward for sharing the jobs of their interest. There is lot to be be done: putting links to the threads and species (exclusively done by …), resurfacing old unidentified mails (a very tiring job currently handled by myself and …), maintenance of website (largely by … and …), monthly week long focus on families (very popular but need volunteers for coordination; Satish ji did an excellent job this month), adding keys and description for selected genera (I have done that for few genera, plus recently I have started adding a short description and citations for plants being uploaded by me so that a click to the link also gives correct name, synonyms and short description; … is already doing that for Orchids), selection of man/woman of the month (done by myself, … or …), and selection of Best photograph/set for the month based on votes polled (expertise by …, assisted by me and …). Larger the database grows, more the help is needed. I wish the members will come forward.

One may like to see any page e.g. one on Xylia xylocarpa as below to feel as to how things are shaping up on every species’ page since Dec’10:
/species/a—l/f/fabaceae/xylia/xylia-xylocarpa

… is already working on the hic-cup as the species’ pages are not turning up on search.
Even after putting around 4 to 5 hours everyday since Dec’10, I feel I shall not be able to update efloraofindia website on own my own as around 4100 threads are still to be connected/ resurfaced (lot of assistance received from …) along with adding appropriate information on the efloraofindia website from efloraindia threads & elsewhere as per the example as above.
