Trees, bole buttressed; bark greyish-brown; blaze red; branchlets, young leaves and buds densely pubescent. Leaves simple, alternate; stipules lateral, caudous; petiole 15-35 mm, slender, pubescent when young, swollen at base and tip, 2 minute glands at tip; lamina 5-12 x 2.3-6.5 cm elliptic-ovate, elliptic-obovate, elliptic-oblong or ovate, base cuneate or acute, apex abruptly acuminate with emarginate tip, margin distantly crenate or serrate, glabrous on both sides, coriaceous, punctate, domatia glandular, lateral nerves 4-8 pairs, pinnate, slender, prominent, intercostae reticulate, slender, faint. Flowers bisexual, white, in axillary and terminal racemes; peduncle puberulus when young; pedicel 3 mm long; sepals 5, 4-5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, puberulous outside, glandular inside; petals 5, white, 6-8 mm, laciniate, glandular, inserted round the base of glandular disc; stamens many, inserted between the glands on the disk; anthers tipped with hairs; ovary superior, subglobose, placed on a raised torus, densely hairy outside, 3-celled, ovules 2 in each cell; style subulate, entire. Fruit a drupe, 2.5 × 2.5 cm, oblong, stone one. Flowering and fruiting: May-October

Abstract: Elaeocarpus section Elaeocarpus in southern India and Sri Lanka is revised. Nine species are recognised, including three new species (E. hedyosmus Zmarzty, E. variabilis Zmarzty and E. taprobanicus Zmarzty) and one new variety (E. serratus L. var. weibelii Zmarzty). Elaeocarpus hedyosmus Zmarzty sp. nov. is the well-known E. amoenus sensu auctt. redescribed. The original syntypes of E. amoenus Thwaites included three different species, and Meijer’s (1995) lectotypification means that this name must be restricted to a distinct, less well-known species. Elaeocarpus variabilis Zmarzty is the well-known E. glandulosus sensu auctt. (syn. E. oblongus sensu auctt.) redescribed. The name E. glandulosus Wall. ex Merr. must be applied to a northern species, probably E. hygrophilus Kurz, after Merrill’s (1951) validation of the name E. glandulosus Wall. Elaeocarpus subvillosus Arn. is lectotypified. It is common for collections from the Wallich Herbarium to be erroneously cited in descriptions of southern Indian Elaeocarpus. The author’s determinations of this material are included as Appendix 1. Appendix 2 lists other exsiccatae. An index to accepted names and synonymy is given as Appendix 3. I have two trees for id:
1) Found around Lingmala forest near Panchgani. Photo clicked in month of March. A specimen of this is also observed in Pune University garden. Flowering now but flowers too high up to get any clear shot with ordinary camera. 2) Found in Pune university – young tree, not very tall, near NET/SET dept. – Photo clicked in in March Is it Crateva sp.? ( second one) 2. Elaeocarpus sp.??? Still looking for definite ids of both image one and two. Pl. attach original large size image so that details can be seen. Coorg Forest tree — pls. id AS_28052012: Pls id this Coorg forest tree flowering in February. Some Elaeocarpus species. Rudraksha tree. Its look like Elaeocarpus serratus L.f, i have seen this tree very common around Lingmala forest , Panchgani, its local name is Kashav, fruits edible. For me Its look like E. serratus? There seems to be lot of confusion in the nomenclature of WG’s Elaeocarpus. I think this is Elaeocarpus oblongus (=E. variabilis, = E.glandulosus, = E.tectorius). Plant list for some reasons treats E.oblongus and E.variabilis as distinct taxa. I agree with … Please see the link to access an earlier discussion in this group. I think we (those who do not have botanical books like me) have to refer to such book links in future to get correct species with proper author citation. Could someone please enlighten me on how to distinguish this as E.oblongus ?
The leaves and mature red leaves seem to be common to all species. The bark is grey, mottled with black patches ( peeling bark??), while serraatus and sphericus are reported to have brownish barks. Some history of this Tree:
This tree stands outside the Nalknad palace/Hunting lodge, the last refuge of the last Kodava (Coorgi) king who ousted Tipu from Coorg, but was finally vanquished by the British. It was then the thickest forest , and this tree was perhaps a sapling.

Yes … Nomenclature of Elaeocarpus tectorius (Lour.) Poir. appears to be quite confusing. CoL lists it as a syn. of Elaeocarpus robustus Roxb.
POWO lists it as an accepted species.
