Gentiana pedicellata (D. Don) Griseb., Gen. Sp. Gent. 273 (1838). (Syn: Ericala pedicellata Wallich ex D. Don, London Edinburgh Philos. Mag. & J. Sci. 8: 76. 1836; E. procumbens D. Don ex G. Don; Gentiana pedicellata var. wallichii Kusnezow; G. quadrifaria Blume var. pilosula C. B. Clarke.); . Common name: Purple Stalked Gentian • Nepali: चरा को खुत्ता Chara ko khutta .
Gentiana pedicellata has smaller flowers (7-8mm across), which are usually deeper blue than those of G. argentea and G. capitata. The throat lines are dark blue. Plicae are closer in size to the petals giving a more round appearance to the flower. The plants now are closer to the ground (about 2cm high), much branched and hardly show the stems. Sepals are out-curved, edged in black or dark purple, and reach about half-way up the corolla tube. The basal leaves are longer and fall off early. I am quoting Polunin and Stainton’s description to support my identification; 750-3800m. Cultivated areas, shrubberies; common in Nepal on heavily grazed ground. Jan.–Jun. A small much-branched annual herb in lax form, with tiny pale blue flowers at the ends of terminal and lateral branches. Flowers 6-8mm long, with shallow triangular lobes with fine points and with lobules a little shorter and broader; calyx about half as long as corolla, with out-curved lobes. Leaves lanceolate 5-10mm, the basal leaves when present much longer and broader; stems branched above, to 8cm but often much shorter. This description matched our plants closely. Our plants are short and that could either be because of the heavily-grazed slope or the timing of flowering. In better, undisturbed conditions, plants may grow taller. I will keep a lookout for that. Please correct me if I am wrong. I would also love to hear from Saroj Kasaju ji to know if this plant is in flower in his location in Nepal and whether it has similar characteristics. This is same as mine from Chopta and Kedarnath (from Indian Flora upload). Have to decide between G. pedicellata (G. quadrifaria) and Gentiana membranulifera T.N.Ho, as G. marginata seems to be an illegitimate name, and alternate name Gentianodes eumarginata proposed in eFl of Pak is synonym of G. membranulifera.. Any one having access to Gentianaceae of India, BSI publication can help, May be … can help in this direction. What about Gentiana argentea..?? In Gentiana argentea plicae are acuminate and lobes longer and long acuminate. Very beautiful pictures of these flowers and all your posts for this Family Fortnight. You have a vast collection. Only three species of Gentiana have been reported to occur in Sirmaur district of H.P. It should be Gentiana argentea Most extensive work on the plants of Sirmaur is “FLORA OF SIRMAUR (HIMACHAL PRADESH” by Kaur and Sharma of Punjabi University Patiala (2004). Campanulaceae & Gentianaceae Week: Gentiana for id…: Size of flower and altitude of place should help. G. ornata usually occurs above 3300 m alt, and flowers are 25-30 mm long. Yes Sir altitude was more than 3200 mt but flower size was bit less 15-20 mm 15-20 mm is too small for G. coronata, let us explore other options. I think Gentiana pedicellata (D. Kalatope Al170311a: The last Gentiana I had put up was G. depressa.. this one looks almost the same but I think it might be different since there are more than one flower on it and the leaves seem smaller and greener to me… Location Kalatope, Chamba dist. Altitude 2100 mt Habit herb Habitat wild Height 3 inches Could this be G.pedicellata???? Only a wild guess..!!! Perhaps this photo should help… Its not G. pedicellata.. though it looked alike from the top.. welll… then back to square one… G. depressa (according to my FOH) is supposed to have solitary flowers… Even I was not comfortable with G. pedicellata which is a delicate and longer plant. I would suggest G. carinata, if flowers are shorter than 1.5 cm. It does seem so, sir… G. carinata? I thought it was darker… but of course in this one too the flower shuts itself… if it is in the shadows. I think Gentiana pedicellata (D. Don) Griseb. only as per images herein.
