Stem tufted, to 15 cm tall, slender, to 1 mm wide, erect, trigonous. Leaves folded, half (or less) as long as stem, to 3 mm wide, thin, acuminate. Inflorescence simple, capitate, to 1.5 cm; involucral bracts 3, lower one equal to inflorescence. Spikelets 5-7 in a cluster, digitate, stellate, oblong, 1.5 x 0.4 cm, purple, 15-40-flowered; rachilla persistent, straight, corky, wingless; glumes ovate, to 2.5 mm, thin, mucro to 0.5 mm, erect or recurved, sides 7-9 nerved, throughout the whole length, keeled. Stamens 3; filaments to 2 mm, anthers oblong, to 1 mm, red-crested. Stigmas 3. Nut obovoid, triquetrous, margins concave, pale or stramineous, white – puncticulate, brown-stipitate, apiculate.

Description:                
Annual, tufted herb, 10-15cm tall. Leaves folded, 2mm wide, thin, shorter than stem;  sheaths reddish and inflated. Inflorescence capitate, simple anthela; spikes 5-7 digitately arranged, reddish-brown, 1-1.5cm long; involucral bracts 3, equal to head; spikelets 15-30 flowered, compressed; glumes ovate, 2- 2.5 mm, thin, mucro 0.5 mm, erect or recurved, keeled. Stamens 3; red-crested. Stigmas 3. Nut obovoid, triquetrous, margins concave, pale or stramineous, white – puncticulate, apiculate. 
Habitat & location: Common in rocky areas. Photographed at Udayagiri and at Rapur at higher altitudes.
