Botanical Survey of India has published a book entitled ‘Orchids of India: A Pictorial Guide’ which is authored by Drs S.K. Singh, D.K. Agrawala, J.S. Jalal, S.S. Dash, A.A. Mao and P. Singh. About 1243 species of orchids are listed in India under 155 genera. Each genus and species is provided with correct name, protologue citation, synonyms and basionym. More importantly, there are 775 good colour pics showcasing more than half of Indian Orchid flora. Seven plates are dedicated to show range of floral diversity (flower, labellum, column and pollinia). Since the book is in the form of a pictorial checklist description and keys are not given. Though I am not completely aware of Orchid books on Indian specie, this document seems to be the most exhaustive account with authorship of hard core taxonomists.

Images of few pages of this book are attached for those who may think of procuring it from BSI at the cost of mere Rs 1460=00. It is a large sized (33.5×23.5cm), all colour book with 547 pages and should not be mistaken as a field book. Binding of the book may pose problems to frequent users.

Botanical Survey of India (BSI) deserves appreciations and my sincere thanks for bringing this publication on Indian Orchids.

Thank you … I think it might make an interesting Christmas gift for orchid lovers who buy some orchid plants
