South Indian Mahua is a variety of Mahua which is predominently found in South India. It differs from the usual Mahua in that its leaves are narrower.

Mohua is one of the most important of Indian forest trees, not because it may possess valuable timber – and it is hardly ever cut for this purpose – but because of its delicious and nutritive flowers. It is a tree of abundant growth and, to the people of Central India, it provides their most important article of food as the flowers can be stored almost indefinitely.

It is large and deciduous with a thick, grey bark, vertically cracked and wrinkled. Most of the leaves fall from February to April, and during that time the musky-scented flowers appear. They hang in close bunches of a dozen or so from the end of the gnarled, grey branchlets. The reddish young leaves with the flower clusters look very attractive. The flower stalks are green or pink and furry, about 5 cm. long. The plum-coloured calyx is also furry and divides into four or five lobes; within them lies the globular corolla, thick, juicy and creamy white. Through small eyelet holes at the top, the yellow anthers can be seen. The stamens are very short and adhere to the inner surface of the corolla; the pistil is a long, protruding green tongue. It is at night that the tree blooms and at dawn each short-lived flower falls to the ground.

A couple of months after the flowering period the fruit opens. They are fleshy, green berries, quite large and containing from one to four shiny, brown seeds. (Ref. LOWERING TREES & SHRUBS IN INDIA – CSIR)

got this sapling as Madhuca indica. I think it is Madhuca longifolia var longifolia. Can anyone please confirm and also let me know the growth habit of this tree? How wide does its canopy get?

Thanks for the id confirmation. I also assumed the same from the online pictures, but being first time introduction to the tree, wanted some seasoned pair of eyes to confirm.
Alco, can you and/or other members please provide more info on Madhuca longifolia var longifolia’s growth habit? How is its canopy (medium like 10-15 ft or very wide like 50ft), what kind of roots (lot of surface roots or deep roots, how about buttresses), fast or slow growing, branching habit.

It is Madhuca longifolia – Ippe/ Hippe/ Iluppai. This is a heritage tree in S.Karnataka.

The fruit pulp is edible, tasty.

Seeds used for lamp oil in Tumkur, Mysore….
Seeds germinate easily in polybags when sown directly.

Madhuca longifolia is what we see commonly in and around Bangalore, mostly planted.

Madhuca indica is found quite rarely in the wild in forests around Bangalore (Turallibetta etc), the leaves are much broader, bark has horizontal fissures when tree is young. Fruits are 2 to 3 seeded,(compressed) with less pulp unlike M.longifolia.
M.indica and M.longifolia are different by leaves, bark, fruits and flowers.

This looks very much like Madhuca longifolia var longifolia (South indian Mahua) to me too. This does not look like Madhuca nerifolia because M. nerifolia fruit has a characteristic beaked strand like structure in the end of the fruit. Also the leaf apex of M. nerifolia is rounded and i can see in one of the leaf in the picture that that apex is not rounded.

Because all leaves are “like” typical terminilia, it was my guess, not sure. I’m still waiting for the id.

it is our common mahua tree only Madhuca longifolia (J.Koenig ex L.) J.F.Macbr. (Sapotaceae), you can get characteristic horizontal branching pattern, odour from the leaves. even you will get latex from the tree, it is a tall tree, it is narrow leaved one, another species is with broader pubescent leaves, it is deciduous tree, flowers during summer. flowers and fruits are sweet, seed oil is having several uses.

I’m so happy that finally the mystery of this tree is over, I waited almost 2 months to get the id. Initially I was not convinced that it was “Madhuca longifolia” because I myself during our regular plantation have planted many “Moha” (Marathi name) trees and they have a different rounded shape and very broad leaves etc. Thanks all for helping out.

I’ve seen 3 such trees in this area, two close to post office and one at Durga Devi Hill, Nigdi.

BTW, we, Vasundhara Abhiyan (www.cleanearthmovement.com) do a lot of work on Soil and Water Conservation and have planted around 8000 native trees in last 8 years at Baner Hill, Pune, MH. We work there on every sunday morning from 7-10am. Some of them have started flowering now and have reached a height of 25-30 feet.

There are 2 types of Mahua tree. The one shown above is having longish leaves : Madhuca longifolia var longifolia. The other one, more common in Maharashtra is Madhuca longifolia var. latifolia with leaves more broader.

Thank you … Yes, actually I had read Mr. Mahajan sir’s book many times and had seen the broad leave one’s Mahua tree myself daily at our hill. However, after getting the ID I did read the info once again and then got the info that there are two types, This is really interesting, but very satisfied about the id. In fact, I did went to the person who lives next to this tree and told them about the id and importance of this tree.

How to identify 2 different species of Indian butter tree.

I studied a recent article that states one (நெட்டிலை இலுப்பை) needs to be conserved and listed in IUCN.
The local nurseries are not aware of two different species.

you have not mentioned leaf size, attachment or presence of latex. In the present situation this can be guessed as fruiting Cerbera manghas of Apocynaceae.

Looks like Cerbera manghas.

Fruit no where closer to family Apocynaceae…. so it cant be Cerbera. Check in Sapotaceae

Closest I can go is Xantolis tomentosa as per images and details herein and as per comparative images at Sapotaceae. Pl. check.
