It is a resilient mangrove species, does not have salt glands and aerial roots, and so technically it is a non-mangrove or mangrove associate species. It has adapted to its saline environment by a salt excretory mechanism known as gall formation. The network of perforated snake-like roots help to grip the less consolidated and eroding soils. The species has both male and female trees, female flowers produce pink berry-like fruits from a March to October. The above is male flowering with several catkin-like spikes.
.
This is a poisonous plant and may cause blindness if the sap enters the eyes. However, the sap also has medicinal properties and is indigenously used in the treatment of rheumatism.

Euphorbiaceae week- Excoecaria agallocha L. Mangrove species.:
Excoecaria agallocha –Milky mangrove. I have taken these pictures at the Salim Ali Bird sanctuary, Goa, mangroves section, in Sep.2010. This is the only member of the Euphorbiaceae family associated with mangroves ( Ref: Godrej A symbiosis of Industry and nature, 2000, pg:91). It is a resilient mangrove species, does not have salt glands and aerial roots, and so technically it is a non-mangrove or mangrove associate species. This is a poisonous plant and may cause blindness if the sap enters the eyes. However, the sap also has medicinal properties and is indigenously used in the treatment of rheumatism. – Please find attached pic of the roots of milky mangrove. Roots run along the ground surface and often knotted and covered with lenticels. – Two interesting links to the research articles on the Phytochemical investigations of the bark of Excoecaria and another one on anti-ulcer activity. eks-see-KAIR-ee-a — from the Latin ex-caeco (to blind, make blind) a-GAL-o-ka — Latinized from the ancient word for a resinous, aromatic tree commonly known as: blind-your-eye mangrove, blinding tree, cametty eagle wood, milky mangrove, river poison tree, salt swamp tiger’s milk • Bengali: gewa • Konkani: उसो uso • Malayalam: കോമട്ടി koomatti • Marathi: गेवा geva • Oriya: guan • Tamil: தில்லை tillai • Telugu: తెల్ల tella and more names in Tamil: அகதி akati, ஆக்கொல்லி akkolli, அம்பலவிருட்சம் ampala-virutcam, அம்பலத்தி ampalatti, ஆடியகூத்தன் atiya-kuttan, கொக்குமேனி kokkumeni, பருவி paruvi, வரிவனம் vari-vanam botanical names: Excoecaria agallocha L. … synonyms: Commia cochinchinensis Lour. • Excoecaria affinis Endl. •Excoecaria camettia Willd. • Excoecaria ovalis Endl. • Excoecaria sphaerosperma F.Muell. ex Pax [Illegitimate] •Stillingia agallocha (L.) ID request – RD3 – Mumbai – 29th March ’13 : 1 image. 3 posts by 2 authors.
I had taken this picture with my blackberry phone last year. This tree was seen in Mahim creek (Mumbai). I have only one photo but hope to be able to identify it. Sorry I don’t have photos from more angles as
stipulated in the guidelines. These are the male flowers of Excoecaria agallocha. The dark green leaves in the photograph belong to this tree.

LOOKS LIKE MALE PLANT of Excoecaria agallocha Tree for ID :: Devgad, Konkan, May 2017 :: ARKMAY14 : 6 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (4) Re attaching with correct orientation. Attachments (5) This appears to be Excoecaria agallocha L. [Euphorbiaceae]. Zooming into your last photograph [Type14_IMG_9943.JPG], a pair of basal glands at the petiole junction is just about visible in certain leaves on careful observation. Have marked out this characteristic feature in your image.
Your sharp eyes detected the plant even in absence of flowers and fruits.
Ahh! Thank you … for the ID. Well Observed… … It is the Same…
