Yes, pertinent issues. there is an economy of ideas that shapes our urban environments and it hasnt yet begun to include concerns much wider than beautification, so that is a pity. Urban environments need more than to just go with the minimum gesture to nature, by which is usually meant, ornamental trees and paving everything else for a ‘neat’ or ‘clean’ look, or some floral borders etc.. I havent been to the place mentioned so I can hardly comment, which is why I am sharing few of my thoughts on what is generally the state of affairs. It is my hope and prayer that this forum is the place where scholars, students and professionals from diverse fields will share their convictions and skills to make wholesome and healthy cities.
I am part of 2-3 large urban landscape projects where we are attempting to re-introduce biodiversity (in the form of native species of plants, along with associated insect and bird life) into urban areas (in Western India). I hope to share some of these with all of you in the near future. While these are a mere drop in the ocean, perhaps with all of us (esp this very vibrant community) taking up the cause, I am sure collectively there is a bit that we can accomplish. I must mention it here that you’ll see as you look thru daily abridged summary that our group’s focus and aim is to identify Indian flora … trees, shrubs, vines, lianas, herbbs, fungi, Orchids, cacti etc and develop keys …taxonomic keys for Indian flora, in future we also would most likey have a database of //or mapped areas of presence of particular species in india… spontaneous or introduced…
activism is a personal affair… here.. not our goal..at this minute, but information…solid scientific … gained here can always be written up and published elsewhere and/ or shared with other groups and in personal lives…some of us in Kolkata fund plantings of useful native trees when authorities allow it… or go and help in various ways the few ayurvedic herbal gardens where herbs and medicinal trees etc are planted or cared for… every little bit helps… trees these slender, high-growing palms: Can anyone tell me which trees these slender, high-growing palms are? Palm Trees of Bangalore – RA – Phoenix sylvestris – Wild Date Palm Tree: Wild Date Palm is the wild cousin of the better known Date Palm. The single-seeded fruit ripens to a purple-red colour, and is eaten in India.
