Distribution of Gouania microcarpa DC. in India: While compiling regional names of Gouania microcarpa DC., I found its distribution in India, of this species differing at a few sites among many, as follows:
Recent study in 2020 says the global distribution is restricted to India and Sri Lanka
READ MORE: Cahen, D., Stenn, K.S. & Utteridge, T.M.A. A revision of the genus Gouania (Rhamnaceae) in the Philippines and Sundaland. Kew Bull 75, 25 (2020). At eFI, we find from various resources, compiled as follows:
India (Punjab), Jammu & Kashmir, Malaysia, Myanmar [Burma] (Bago, Mon, Taninthayi), Sri Lanka, Indonesia as per Catalogue of life & Maharastra, Karnataka & Kerala as per ENVIS – FRLHT Based on observations found posted on the internet (including eFI), it strongly seems that the distribution of Gouania microcarpa DC.,
POWO has divided India in broadly 5 regions: West Himalaya, East Himalaya, Assam, Andamans and India while giving details.
They refer Assam to anywhere in NE India. They refer India to any place other than their West Himalaya, East Himalaya, Andamans and Assam.
They fill their map accordingly.
So distribution stated by you is correct as per POWO also. I understand that the map of India gets normally filled as you explained.
In the overview, just “NW. India” is mentioned in the native range; Western Ghats or peninsular India is not included.
I want to know whether this species is distributed in northern India. Accordingly I can expect that there are names for this plant in northern India OR come to conclude that the plant is not yet given a name in those regions. Pl. see distribution as per POWO:
Assam, Bismarck Archipelago, India, Myanmar, New Guinea, Sri Lanka, West Himalaya That page at POWO has the distribution written elaborately after the map.
I seek your attention to the distribution written at the top of the page as follows:
The native range of this species is NW. India to Myanmar, Papuasia.
But, I am not specifically looking at what POWO or other sites have written.
Let me express my query another way:
Most of the sites have mentioned distribution of Gouania microcarpa DC. in India as northern part of India, whereas I strongly believe it is not so.
Rather, within India this species is restricted only to peninsular India.
Let me know whether I am mistaken. I think detailed distribution in POWO is right. . References:
