Antidesma roxburghii, a beautiful addition to this group.

Just saw your comment in Facebook. Well, it was me who erred in merging A. roxburghii under A. velutinosum. Now that access to the type specimen images are available, I have rectified this mistake and Antidesma roxburghii will appear as a distinct species in my forthcoming publication with proper justifications.

Thanks, …, WCSP (Kew) gives Antidesma roxburghii Wall. ex Tul. as a syn. of Antidesma velutinosum Blume, Bijdr. Fl. Ned. Ind.: 112 (1825).

I am clarifying again.

Chakrabarty & Gangopadhyay in J. Econ. Taxon. Bot. 24(1): 44. 2000 combined Antidesma roxburghii Wall. ex Tul. under Antidesma velutinosum Blume.  This treatment has been widely accepted and everywhere (in all the lists) there is mention that the former is a synonym of the latter.  However, latest studies  showed that while the fruits of Antidesma velutinosum are compressed, those of Antidesma roxburghii are  ovoid to ellipsoid and inflated (not compressed) apart from some other differences. Hence Antidesma roxburghii is being reinstated to species rank (Chakrabarty & Balakrishnan, 2018 – unpublished, in press).

Great explanation and reasoning. in addition to the physical differences in fruits, are there any Molecular/Genetic differences?

Thank you …, The segregation of the Euphorbiaceae subfamily Phyllanthoideae to family Phyllanthaceae and the classification of the family by Hoffmann et al. (2006) are largely based on molecular studies.

Such studies have been carried out on some tribes including genera Breynia, Sauropus, Glochidion, Phyllanthus etc but so far no such studies have been published in Antidesma group.

Data available so far are insufficient at present and it will further studies are desirable. Some studies available so far do not corroborate well with the external morphological differences and delimitations and this raises practical difficulties.

yes of course, its a mammoth task. many many labs would have to be coordinated. well! we will wait.

This species was so far considered to be a synonym of Antidesma  velutinosum Blume.  Recently Chakrabarty & Balakrishnan (Indo-Burmese Phyllanthac. 61. 2018) reinstated this to species rank, distributed in North-east India, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The fruits are inflated here but compressed in A. velutinosum.
The photographic images were obtained through the courtesy of Dr. Santanu Dey, Nagaland University.

I am sorry that in the title, there is a typographic error: “Tull. ex Wall.”  Please read this as “Wall. ex Tul.”
