Names of Plants in India :: Lecanthus peduncularis (Wall. ex Royle) Wedd. : 1 post by 1 author. 1 image.
………………
I think … plant is Lecanthus obtusus, which was for long considered a synonym of L. peduncularis, but is a much shorter, delicate herb, with short peduncles. I am attaching the original description and drawing of Lecanthus peduncularis var. garhwalensis, which is now a synonym of Lecanthus obtusus. On my recent visit to Dhanaulti, I saw Lecanthus peduncularis growing in great numbers and realized how robust a plant it is. That made me relook into the much shorter and delicate plant we had also found earlier. Leaves of L. peduncularis are acute to acuminate, never obtuse as seen in … plant.
Pl. check with GBIF specimens of Lecanthus obtusus from Nilgiris (one and two).
Yes, the herbarium specimens agree with my understanding of Lecanthus obtusus. The leaf margins in this species vary from being toothed to being almost entire. I think Dinesh’s plant agrees with this species. Prominent features are the small size of this plant, and the short peduncles. I am attaching an image of a typical Lecanthus peduncularis plant to contrast it with.
I think images at https://efloraofindia.com/2021/10/29/lecanthus-pileoides/ (from Alka ji, Sushant ji and Saroj ji), may also be of Lecanthus obtusus (Royle) Hand.-Mazz. as Lecanthus pileoides S.S.Chien & C.J.Chen not reported from India.
I agree with you on this. Sushant and Saroj’s plants agree very well. Alka ji’s plant does appear to be a bit different, but I think Lecanthus obtusus is the closest match with the right distribution.
I will correct my notes.

What about this one …? Same Lecanths sp.?
Yes, … That is why I tried to obtain your opinion.
How can we establish? This would be a new sp. for Nepal.
It is known from East and West Himalaya. So it is not surprising that it is found in Nepal too.
Need to work out on this
Checklist of Nepal already gives Lecanthus obtusus (Royle) Hand.-Mazz. as a syn. of Lecanthus peduncularis (Royle) Wedd.
Yes, that is there but it has not been updated and most of the databases like POWO, GBIF, CoL, IPNI and WP have mentioned this as different sp. Even the book by KK shrestha et all have not synonymized this sp.

Lepisorus from Dirang area, march 2024: 3 images.
This one is a Lepisorus but now, I have some documentation and I’m afraid I should have removed the rhizome to see some more features.
Yes, unfortunately without seeing a good close-up of the rhizome showing its scales Lepisorus species cannot be identified. Also the approx. altitude is needed. At a wild guess, I would think it might be L. thunbergianus or L. contortus, perhaps a small L. nudus. But these are not identifications as the essential diagnostic features are not shown.

Fern from Kumbahlgarh march 2024: 2 images.
Can we put a name on this fern.
Pictures were taken in the surrounding jungle of the Kumbahlgarh fortress this spring.
It will be quite difficult (or at least expensive) for me to find those promising books from France where I live and if I try hard to be as much as exhaustive when taking pictures of plants, my lack of experience in botany may explain some oversights. I hope my pictures of numerous indian ferns will be more complete.

eFloraofIndia website updated up to 31st August’24: more than 14,000 species:
efloraofindia (eFI in short) website is one of the biggest non-commercial site, one of its kind in the world & also without advertisements, based on the collection of photographic images of wild plants, where no money or professional organisation is involved except for the selfless efforts of its members from diverse backgrounds. It is documenting the Flora of India that is being discussed on efloraofindia google e-group along with supplementing the working of the group. It also has the largest database on the net on Indian Flora with more than 14,000 species (along with more than 4,00,000 pictures), from some of the best Flora Photographers of India. You can go through Story of eFloraofIndia’s journey on 15th anniversary. Members should add Efloraofindia website link in their favourites & give species’ links from this while posting or replying in a thread as a lot of discussed data is already available here.
More important is the fact that thousands of observations of hundreds of our members are available here (many of which one will not find documented anywhere) & easily searchable through general web searches (after adding efloraofindia) as well as by searching on the Efloraofindia website. And these are going to increase with every passing day. These original observations will be a treasure trove & will be a delight to a lot of people. With the pace at which new species are being added to our database, it should become the premier resource for taxonomic research in India. As the data is multiplying, we need more volunteers to take up this work. Details can be seen at Volunteers required.
For better viewing of species’ pages, colour scheme & formatting is being followed as at the footer of every efloraofindia page.
These days a lot of information about Indian Flora is available under Cc-by license (Licensees may copy, distribute, display and perform the work and make derivative works based on it only if they give the author or licensor the credits in the manner specified by these). Due credits/ attributions are to be given. Such sources include Wikipedia, India Biodiversity Portal, IUCN Red List, PFAF, Flora of Tibet website, IBIS Flora etc. I am trying to add such information with due credits. I am also trying to add keys & summarizing the information at the top of the page (for the pages I am coming across while adding information from current threads). Genera pages are also cleaned up so that species (due to wrong botanical names or being syn. of some other species) are deleted or properly connected as per the currently accepted name along with references. Future eFI genera pages will be like Cyanotis depending upon the time we get, as & when we update a genus page so that we are aware which are the species which are likely to be found in India (depending on the net resources) & which are already available in eFI.
Kudos & thanks to Outstanding Contributors, The Pillars, Subject/ Area Experts, Moderators, Major contributors & other members who are rendering selfless service to this group & made this endeavour possible for the benefit of everyone.
Thanks Garg ji for your untiring efforts to improve our database.
