Wild Plant for ID : 170711 : AK-2:
Taken on the way to Kodaikanal by the roadside on 22/10/08.
Had small round red berries.
Could not get any closer to it.

I think, Breynia vitis-idea of Euphorbiaceae family. It says taken on the way to Kodaikananal but no information regarding at what altitude, what habitat type and etc. Please provide such information to make the id process easy.

It was at a higher altitude in the mountains travelling from Munnar to Kodaikanal along the way. Won’t be able to give the exact altitude as the picture was taken casually while travelling.

It is Breynia vitis-idaea (Burm.f.) C.E.C. Fischer of Euphorbiaceae. The spelling is idaea, not idea!

Yes I think … is right. Breynia vitis-idaea

Euphorbiaceae for identification 040113MK02:

Please help me to identify this shrub. Is this any Phyllanthus sp.? I can’t see any flowers in this plant.
Leaf: c. 4 x 3 cm
Fruit: c. 1 cm across
Date: 20 Dec 2012
Place: Javvadu hills, Tiruvannamalai dist., TN
Alt.: c. 200 m asl
Habitat: near a stream (riparian)

Could this be Sauropus albiflorus?

Looks like Phyllanthus reticulatus

Isn’t it Breynia vitis-idaea?

Is the stem glabrous? It looks like it, so I think the Breynia vitis- idaea more likely.

I agree with …, matches best with Breynia vitis-idaea

This is not a Phyllanthus sp. It is Breynia vitis-idaea of Euphorbiaceae.

Many thanks for the identification. Yes …, the stem was glabrous. It should be Breynia vitis-idaea (Burm.f.) Fischer of Euphorbiaceae. I would like to know the Tamil name for this shrub.

Date: 28 DEC 2014 Altitude: about 600 m asl at crest, about 250 m asl at foothill
ID please.
This plant does not seem to be the common cup-saucer plant Breynia retusa; the “saucer” is missing here.
The plant was about 2m high on the slope; the pendant male flowers about 10 – 12 mm long, about 4 – 5 mm across.
The spherical fruits were about 7 – 8 mm dia; not very sure.
Breynia ¿ species ? … (family: Phyllanthaceae, Euphorbiaceae)

As the saucer is missing, the other common Indian species, Breynia vitis-idaea should be considered.

Yes I agree with your identification

Thank you very much … for the affirmation.

Sharing some pictures for ID shot at Kurintar Nepal on 29 December 2013 at 1000 ft.

I would like to know:
Habit – Height, then whether erect, scandent or bushy
Fruits – dry or fleshy
Sepals – 5 or 6

Sorry to say that these are the only pictures from my old collection when I did not have the knowledge of plant photography.

Appears to be Phyllanthaceae by the similarity in foliage.  May be Phyllanthus or Breynia.

Breynia vitis-idaea (Burm.f.) C.E.C.Fisch. (accepted name)  ??????

Yes …, This is an accepted name. I was hesitating to call this name as the fruitng pedicels here appearing to be  somewhat longer than usual.

Breynia vitis-idaea, I think.

Yes, it is a morphological variant of Breynia vitis-idaea; I have collected both varieties. the leaves are thick, coriaceous, but it is described by many as thin papery leaves; the fruit shape is also different from the traditional descriptions.

Looks like Bridelia retusa.

Date/Time : March 30, 2011 at 6.11pm IST
Location Place : outskirts of Madikeri, Karnataka … 12.451091, 75.711816 (on
Google maps <http://goo.gl/maps/CLqp> … please be patient while downloading map)
Altitude : 3597 ft (above mean sea level)

Yes .., your visualization is quite close. It is B. vitis-idaea, but you need to see the fruits to be sure.

At Flowers of India http://www.flowersofindia.MountainCoffeeBush…,
we have .. plant identified by …. Calling … to validate my plant as Breynia vitis-idaea

I tend to agree with .. id on account of leaf shape and the length of pedicel in male flowers. But a fruiting specimen would really help to confirm the id. As you know, fruiting calyx is enlarged in B. retusa whereas it is not enlarged in B. vitis-idaea.

… a counter-query: Is / Are there any other species close to B. vitis-idaea ?
If B. retusa is the only closest one, then this plant is not it as per my perception … because the flowers that are seen in the posted plant are comparatively larger … as much as 2 – 3 times larger than that of B. retusa.

Without female flowers and fruits it is not possible to comment on the correct identity of the images.

Thank you very very much … for the clarity regarding limitation to resolve the ID of this query.
Someday when I visit Coorg again (hopefully during fruiting season of this plant), I will make it a point to go the site to get the photos.

Yes, it’s ..
