In Benagali it is known as Krishnachurha, as it looks like the Crown There are two colours of the flower: pink and yellow, known respectively as Krishnachuda and Radhachuda.. Yours looks like Krishna chuda inspite of yellow tinges here and there. Caesalpinia is a shrub to small tree, but Radhachura (Peltophorum ferrugineum ) is a tall plant with bright yellow flowers, resembling some what Delonix regia and Colvillea racemosa. Radhachura is also known as Copper pod, for the persistent pods which when dry take copper colour> It is no doubt Caesalpinia. the flowers are generally with yellow tinges here and there. In Mumbai, the common name of this flower is Shankasur. It is urban flower in blooms thorough out the year. I am a little confused. Copper pod or Peltophorum is an entiirely different tree, whereas both Krishnachuda and Radhachuda are bushes, with difference in flower colour only. This is based on cursory observation by me in the gardens, and when caesalpinia grows wild, as in several places. Next time when I see caesalpinia in a garden or growing naturally, I will observe more closely an will let you know. But I am not conviced that Radhachuda is peltophorum.
I just checked Bose and Choudhury’s book. Caesalpinia pulcherrima has petals variously coloured at the centre, crimson, red or golden red. C. pulcherrima flava is a variety with bright yellow flowers, and C. pulcherrima Rosea is a variety with rosy red flowers. It has 3 photographs, with red-gold, yellow and rose red flowers. As per ‘Beautiful Trees & shrubs of Kolkata’ by Chakravorty & Jain, Peltophorum pterocarpum (syn. P. ferrugineum) is since being called as Radhachura, which actually refers to the var. flava (Yellow-flowered) of Caesalpinia pulcherrima. In Bengal Peltophorum pterocarpum, Copper Pod is referred to as Radhachura, whether in error or not I cannot say. Same for Delonix regia referred to as Krishnachura as mentioned by …

Height:2m I think it’s Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Poinciana, Peacock Flower or Red Bird of Paradise). It seems to be Caesalpinia pulcherima, in Bengali also known as Krishnachura, as it looks like the Crown of Lord Krishna. You can very easily distinguish between Krishnachuda and Radhachuda here.
Taken at delhi on 26.6.8.Its a shrub as yet but I guess has the potential to grow into a tree.
Leaf description: Double feathered with 7-8 sets of leaflets (no terminal set), 9 pairs of leaflets in each set. Each leaflet smooth on both sides, rounded apex with a short terminal spine. Spines on stem: solitary, small (near 3 mm), curved

I will not be surprised if this plant was introduced to India ages ago (exagerrating) !! I was earlier mistakenly thought that the yellow variety was C. lutea … until one of my flickr contact made me aware that there is no such species. i was just searching hte web and found out the following names Thank you very much, … that resolves some of my pending IDs at my flickr photostream.

It is interesting that while “Hortus Suburbanus Calcuttensis” mentions Poinciana pulcherrima Linnaeus, “Bengal Plants” doesn’t feature it (or maybe there is, hidden in some unknown name)! And it is far more interesting that today we call Delonix regia (Bojer) Raf. as KRISHNACHURA (কৃষ্ণচূড়া) in Bengali, but Delonix regia has no Bengali name either in “Bengal Plants” or in “Hortus Suburbanus Calcattensis”, and at the same time this plant, Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Linnaeus) Swartz (current accepted name of Poinciana pulcherrima Linnaeus), has been mentioned as KRISHNACHURA (কৃষ্ণচূড়া) in Bengali !
