Celosia argentea-10/8/2011MN:
Sending a photo of Cockscomb (Celosia argentea) from my garden.
Date : 7.2.2010
Time : 3.30 p.m.
Place: Dombivli

Formerly recognised as var. cristata, but not now

You are right. Dr.Almeida in his ‘Flora of Maharashtra’ Vol 4A has labelled this Celosia cristata [syn. C.argentea var.cristata / Cock’s comb] whereas Yadav & Sardesai in their ‘Flora of Kholapur District’ list it as C.argentea var. cristata [locally called Kombada].
Celosia argentea is a distinct species and my photographs of it are available at this link :
https://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/ca…

Strangely GRIN does not seem to be agreeing with Kew Plant List. Although Kew Plant list treats this simply as synonym of C. argentea, GRIN (last updated in May, 2011) treats it as Celosia argentea var. cristata.

Beautiful flowers. I grew once these plants and before flowering started my mother-in-law cut it very thinly thinking that it is the Laal maath (Amaranthus) which we use as vegetable. After all the cuttings she realised her mistake ! In the next time I was successful in having it produce flowers. I have posted the flowers once in eflora.

As you say that the saplings of this one resemble the Amaranthus viridis or that of A. gangeticus. We call the latter as LAL-SHAK (shak = leafy vegetable) in Bengali.

this is possibly a Celosia
but which one?
It was growing isolated in a garden pot in July one year in a local Ashram grounds, in full sun in the heat.
I would appreciate a key and some references

Celosia spicata I hope. Very good photographs.

To me, the topmost inflorescence shows an hint of C. argentea var. cristata.

What i understand about Celosia is that it has two forms, one with crested or feathery spike, it is called C. argentea var. cristata (C. cristata) and the other is without crest or feathery top, known as C. argentea var. spicata (C. spicata).
So, i agree with … and would request … to correct me if my understanding is wrong.

I too agree with …

Family?:
I took the picure of cobscomb at Tuglakabad. But do not have much idea of the the family.

Celosia argentea var. cristata with caution that the matter of identity has to be resolved in eFlora India group.

In addition another document by Graf 1992 names it as Celosia cristata!

Thanks … I thought one of them is cobscomb.

Yes it is ‘Cockscomb” a popular ornamental in India which is cultivated variety of Celosia argentea known as Celosia argentea var. cristata.

Sep 2012
Requesting identification of 3-4 feet tall shrub with maroon flowers at joggers park at Pune

It looks like cockscomb (Celosia cristata).

Thank you … for the Id

I searched for the images of Celosia cristata on net. In all the pictures I didn’t find any with coloured leaves.
Can this be red Amaranth vegetable?
I may be wrong though.

I have this plant at home with coloured leaves and exactly the same soaking pink flowers. I have just posted image of leaves here.
Last year leaves were more of pink. This year leaves are green+ pink.
I had noticed that the part of leaves which were in sun was more pink and the parts in shade were green.
Sparrows gorge on the seeds, I haven’t tried uptill now 🙂
Seeds were sold to me as Celosia Plumosa (Cockscomb), I am still confused as to what exactly it is called celosia argentea var. plumosa or celosia cristata.

OK. But what about the proper ID ?

if you are meaning to ask about basis of Celosia argentea L. and Celosia cristata L. being treated as separate / distinct species, I am referring to the following:
  1. Robertson, K.R. (2003) Celosia L. In: Flora of North America Editorial Committee (eds.) Flora of North America north of Mexico 4. Oxford University Press, New York & Oxford, pp. 406–407. Accessed [11:54 24-11-2025 (DD-MM-YYYY)]
  2. Iamonico, Duilio. (2013). About the circumscription of Celosia argentea (Amaranthaceae) and the related Linnaean taxa. Phytotaxa. 90. 61-64. 10.11646/phytotaxa.90.1.3.
Regards.

I also feel there should be differences based on flowers. But according to POWO all are argentea and as per … we follow POWO.

It is best that …, and all those familiar with Celosia spp. put forth their thoughts to resolve the distinction between Celosia argentea L. and Celosia cristata L.

Celosia cristata can be separated from Celosia argentea both morphologically and genetically, as mentioned in this paper. However POWO will not put them separated because Celosia cristata is not a wild species, and you cannot define a distribution for it, which POWO always has on every species page. So it is up to you if you want to treat them as separate or not.

I don’t know the mentioned Malayalam names are exact names of this plant, however the Malayalam and English spellings are correct.

Both the names: ചെറിയ അടക്കാമണിയൻ cheriya adakkaamaniyan, വെളുത്ത അടക്കാമണിയൻ velutha adakkaamaniyan are listed for the Celosia species: argentea as well as cristata at FRLHT’s ENVIS Centre on Medicinal Plants.

I will remove them from the compilation, if you think they are not appropriate.
I am going to add one apt name suggested by Dr Girish Kumar ji … കോഴിപ്പൂവ് kozhipoovu.

Yes, കോഴിപ്പൂവ് kozhipoovu is an appropriate name, very close to the head of a rooster (here kozhi means rooster)

I find some confusion about argentea and cristata, however flowers look different.

POWO kept all in one sps. under argentia but other databases have some differences.
Yes, …, the flowers definitely look different.

Celosia cristata is known to be a horticultural species; that is – it is only cultivated as an ornamental, sometimes escaping from cultivation to nearby
