I think you are right … As you mentioned, it is unclear if it has to be treated at variety level (ref. many databases), specific level (TPL) or as synonym under C. argentea (s.l.). But I support giving it (and other taxa such as plumosa and cristata) a status (preferably at varietal level) instead clubbing all under C. argentea, in order to understand the level of ‘distinct’ variations/forms.

Plant for ID : 30/11/2011 SMP3 Sinhagad:
A herb observed on Sinhagad fort 25th Nov 2011. Overall the flowers were fairly similar to Celosia argentia but the spikes were much much smaller. The leaves are green bigger. There were other Celosia argentia plants not very close but nearby which had larger spikes and mostly leafless as against this plant with globular inflorescence. The inflorescence looks like Celosia argentea, but the leaves in the second pic point to a different plant. I may be wrong but to me there seems a mix up. Yes … is correct. Leaves in second photograph and most in first and third belong to a different species. You seem to be correct. On carefully observing the spikes of Celosia appear to be emerging through other plants

Maximum number of images in the above search lead to flowers which are similar to ornamental varieties of cockscomb, having a distinct crest on the top of the flowers.
On the other hand search result for Celosia spicata – yields maximum number of images similar to those in this thread and it was also identified in my earlier post of similar looking plant – efi thread. I admit i was wrong, it is Celosia argentea L.

As per the Karthikeyan et al 2009 (Flowering Plants of India) Celosia genus has three naturally occurring species in India. These are C.argentea (with two varieties, namely, C.argentea var. argentea and C.argentea var. cristata), C.polygonoides (restricted to S.India) and C.pulchella (restricted to SW Ghats Nilgiris). However, it does not mention introduced ornamental varieties. Graf 1992 (Hortica) has mentioned ‘cockscomb’ as a separate species C.cristata.
However, Bailey 1949 in his classic ‘Manual of Cultivated Plants’ has mentioned C.argentea as a weed of tropical (Asian) origin with two cultivated forms- 1) very like the wild plants with long narrow silvery spikes (C.argentea var. argentea) and 2) most of the improved domesticated races, ‘cockscomb’ (C.argentea var. cristata).

Isn’t it interesting? very interesting… … weeds in an overly fertilized after the main crop fallow field…may be? To recover soil fertility they do plant legumes, DHONCHE (Sesbania) how often and how widespread is the practice… This is an annual practice and by this time some already have started growing them.
