One of my earlier upload which seems similar to your species (Cyperus plateilema (Steud.) Kük.). So please confirm and validate. I am afraid your sedge doesn’t look like the herbarium found in KEW –
In fact perhaps “Cyperus plateilema (Steud.) Kük. (= Mariscus bulbosus Steud),” not found in India – http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/185391/0
What we have in India is Mariscus bulbosus C.B.Clarke (not of Steud; vide FBI.vi.620) (please check http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/176908/0 for distribution) ….. which is somewhat similar to Mariscus pictus Nees (vide FBI)…. I am not sure if your plant can be same.
The KEY, to identify C. paniceus and C. cyperoides, is different in the book “Bengal Plants” and in FBI, which does not tally with what you have provided here.
As for “glumes”, “wing”, “spikelets”, “florets”….. these are all Greek to me and I have never tried to examine them under microscope, for I know I won’t understand. I agree with Cyperus clarkei C. Cooke, as identified by … Plant specimens have to be studied for correct identity. Can be a variant of Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze, a highly variable species.

Kuntze I placed the question before …, and actually the question was if his thread is same species (not necessarily same specimen) or not. Sorry for late reply. Actually I collected both the specimen from different locality and in different months( one in the month of May and other in the month of October). My second specimen (collected inthe month of October) may be variant of Cyperus cyperoides. So expert will identify & validate. Well, Sir, I attach a couple of shots i recorded today, a less than 1 ft herb in a bamboo thicket. It looks similar to your uploads in this thread.
Earlier I had identified a similar looking species as C. paniceus in thread.
I am still confused between the two species. Both are distributed in your area as well as in our area.
Somebody has to crack the difference between the two. My guess is that (1) cyperoides spikes are dense (2) at least some spikelets should be two flowered (3) plant should be a bit stouter than paniceus.
The problem aggravates by the fact there are var. in both the species, and one more taxon cyperinus need to be considered.

I do not have macro images of my species collected from Assam. But I have visited Meghalaya on 03.10.15 Sir, as you know I am trying to tread a path where only a few members dare to express their opinion! I take advantage of the fact that i have nothing to lose! Cyperus for ID ! Pl. check comparative images. Pl. check It is Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze Just a fine point. Cyperus is not grass. It is perhaps a sedge! It is for my reference. By the way weeds, poaceae, cyperaceae are generally called grass ( घाँस ) in Nepal ! This is true for all places including Srinagar
