. Cyperus plateilema (Steud.) Kük. SN Sep 21 : 9 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (2). Thank you very much for sharing. Can you please tell me how to differentiate this one and 1) Cyperus paniceus (Rottb.) Boeckeler 2) Cyperus cyperoides (L.) O. Kuntze? One of my earlier upload which seems similar to your species (Cyperus plateilema (Steud.) Kük.). So please confirm and validate. I am afraid your sedge doesn’t look like the herbarium found in KEW –
In fact perhaps “Cyperus plateilema (Steud.) Kük. (= Mariscus bulbosus Steud),” not found in India – http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/185391/0
What we have in India is Mariscus bulbosus C.B.Clarke (not of Steud; vide FBI.vi.620) (please check http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/176908/0 for distribution) ….. which is somewhat similar to Mariscus pictus Nees (vide FBI)…. I am not sure if your plant can be same.
The KEY, to identify C. paniceus and C. cyperoides, is different in the book “Bengal Plants” and in FBI, which does not tally with what you have provided here.
As for “glumes”, “wing”, “spikelets”, “florets”….. these are all Greek to me and I have never tried to examine them under microscope, for I know I won’t understand. I agree with Cyperus clarkei C. Cooke, as identified by … Plant specimens have to be studied for correct identity. Can be a variant of Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze, a highly variable species.
ID of Cyperus sp. from Assam KD 04 Oct : 3 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (5). Seems to be a variant of Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze. Need a specimen to confirm the identity BSI doesn’t list Cyperus cyperoides (l.) Kuntze. Instead, it is regarded as synonym of Mariscus sumatrensis (Retz.) Raynal. Another synonym of the taxon is Mariscus siberianus Nees ex C. B. Clarke.Given that it has been identified so can you please tell me if this species is same as in your another thread ? I didn’t find any attachment with your mail. If it is of the nomenclature problem, the current name for Mariscus sumatrensis (Retz.) Raynal and Mariscus siberianus Nees ex C. B. Clarke is Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze, because Mariscus is now treated as Cyperus. In some earlier publications of BSI this species might have appeared under Mariscus, because in those days that was the correct name, but now these are synonyms of Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze Thanks, … Pictures are at link The plant image downloaded from the link is of Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze I placed the question before …, and actually the question was if his thread is same species (not necessarily same specimen) or not. Sorry for late reply. Actually I collected both the specimen from different locality and in different months( one in the month of May and other in the month of October). My second specimen (collected inthe month of October) may be variant of Cyperus cyperoides. So expert will identify & validate. Well, Sir, I attach a couple of shots i recorded today, a less than 1 ft herb in a bamboo thicket. It looks similar to your uploads in this thread.
Earlier I had identified a similar looking species as C. paniceus in thread.
I am still confused between the two species. Both are distributed in your area as well as in our area.
Somebody has to crack the difference between the two. My guess is that (1) cyperoides spikes are dense (2) at least some spikelets should be two flowered (3) plant should be a bit stouter than paniceus.
The problem aggravates by the fact there are var. in both the species, and one more taxon cyperinus need to be considered.

Thank you … Thanks to … I wish if … could upload macro of spikelets of this species. I also wish to know the differentiating characters between C. cyperoides and C. paniceus so that I could determine my species.
I do not have macro images of my species collected from Assam. But I have visited Meghalaya on 03.10.15 Sir, as you know I am trying to tread a path where only a few members dare to express their opinion! I take advantage of the fact that i have nothing to lose! Sir, please do not mind, my assumption is based on the marked spikelets of your resized photograph no.5. Cyperus sp. from Kamrup district, Assam : Attachments (4). 4 posts by 3 authors.

Cyperus paniceus Thank you …! Cyperus paniceus (Rottb.) Boeckeler plantillustrations Looks like Cyperus cyperoides (L) Kuntze I guess … is correct! Looks like Cyperus cyperoides (L) Kuntze Correct Nepali Names : फिरफिरे घाँस Firafire Ghaans / करौँते Karaunte ID-06042013-PR-3 : Attachments (3). 5 posts by 4 authors. I think its Cyperus cyperoides. I do not know how to differentiate a Cyperus cyperoides from a Mariscus paniceus (Rottb.) Vahl (Cyperus paniceus). One interesting find is that while IUCN informs that the later can be found in Gujarat (http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/176887/0), the former finds no mention in IUCN list – http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/177276/0. Again I am confused between the two – Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze and Cyperus paniceus (Rottb.) Boeckeler :- It is Cyperus cyperoides (L) Kuntze .
Altitude : ca.1,000 m.

Habit : Herb
Habitat : Wild I think it is close to Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze as per comparative images at Cyperus. Cyperus digitatus? I think it looks different from images at Cyperus digitatus Roxb. Cyperus cyperoides Check for Cyperus odoratus I think it appears close to images at Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze . SK 3671 19 December 2022 – Grass: 1 high res. image. Cyperus for ID ! Pl. check comparative images. Pl. check It is Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze Just a fine point. Cyperus is not grass. It is perhaps a sedge! It is for my reference. By the way weeds, poaceae, cyperaceae are generally called grass ( घाँस ) in Nepal ! This is true for all places including Srinagar
I just mentioned it because eflora is a botanical site
I myself in a post wrote seeds when I meant fruit
Kind of you to clarify it . MS, June, 2023/03 Cyprus sp. for id: 2 images. Altitude : ca. 1,480 m
