Pls help ID Flowering tree from Coorg Garden : AS-09MAR2012: This is a species of Erythrina. Yes, … right. It is a Coral tree. Thanks for the pointer. In this specimen the wings and keel are all much shorter than in E.indica, just longer than the calyx.

I think Coffee estate guys must have cultivated this tree for shade along with Silver Oak trees.. It does not match with images of Erythrina caffra. I think close to images at Erythrina arborescens Roxb. (found wild in Himalayas, I do not whether it is cultivated in south India) …, this must be Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. found cultivated in / around coffee plantations, in hill stations of South India. Locality: Yercaud, Tamil Nadu I compared the web photos of A. Fraxinifolius (pink cedar) with my photo. The leaves and leaf venation look quite different. The inflorescence also seems much longer. Will await more info.
Looks like Erythrina variegata (syn. E.indica). However, I am not sure which is the valid name : E.indica or E.variegata. Please check. It is a species of Erythrina of Leguminosae family. I do not recall thorns being present all over the tree. I must confess, however, that I had not observed the tree closely enough. I am sending one more photograph which I had taken. Hope it helps. As per the plantlist.org Erythrina variegata is the valid name and not E. indica. No, not during the monsoon. It is after the monsoon. Got some nice pictures last year with plenty of birds on it. The second photo shows an Oriental White-eye and the third photograph shows a pair of Leafbirds belonging to Chloropsis genus. The leaf birds are golden fronted leaf birds. it is wild and that is why it attracts birds and animals. Tall Erythrina trees planted along NH49, most probably exotic, in Chinnakanal, Munnar. Hoping to know the ID.

Erythrina tree for identification 250712MK02: Please help me to identify this Erythrina tree found in a open grassland near Sholayar of Valparai. The tree is about 6-7 metres in height; the flower measures almost 3cm longer.

For me it is Erythrina suberosa I think it is Erythrina stricta As far as I know E. stricta has glabrous leaves and petioles. These later pics show some pubescence. I think it should be Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. as per images herein. .

Flower for id pl. Erythrina Species? Erythrina sp. yes but which one for the last five hours i have been vacillating between the obvious: Also check for E.caffra. A guess. encouraging Petal shape is more roundish. Doesn’t match with E.indica. May be E.caffra as suggested by … Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. ?? Looks close. Can’t differentiate between E.caffra and E.subumbrans leaves. Confused….. Hullatti, about 1526 m asl Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. It took me some time to get convinced that it is not E. stricta, mainly because this one is a lone tree in the wilderness along the Mysore Ooty road.
Since it was far away it was not easy to get a clear picture of flowers.
I managed to crop one picture to see the leaflets a little closer. I am putting it here if at all you want to check.
I do see a pair of glands at the base of bottom leaflets.
I am revising the ID to Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr.
