Erythrina subumbrans
Pls help ID Flowering tree from Coorg Garden : AS-09MAR2012: Tall tree 45 ft or more in height, planted in Garden at Coorg. This is a species of Erythrina. Yes, … right. It is a Coral tree. Thanks for the pointer. In this specimen the wings and keel are all much shorter than in E.indica, just longer than the calyx.
The standard petal was about 2cm long. Is this Erythrina mitis (Shady Coral tree) or subumbrans ?
Please find the ID for link blow:
Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. (Synonym: Erythrina lithosperma Miq.)
Thanks for the ID. Although exotic, It seems to be used on the coffee plantation (where it was photographed) as a shade tree.
nice, … but do you have the whole tree picture and it would be lovely to see the habitat with the plantation
esp. the light and shadow play would be of great interest to me Big tree seen in Coffee estates in Chikmagalur Region (Karnataka).
Erythrina sp.. ID please.. Date/Time: 25-01-2014 / 09:00AM Perhaps Erythrina caffra Thanks a lot … for the probable ID. It does look like E. caffra. I think Coffee estate guys must have cultivated this tree for shade along with Silver Oak trees..
It does not match with images of Erythrina caffra. I think close to images at Erythrina arborescens Roxb. (found wild in Himalayas, I do not whether it is cultivated in south India)
…, this must be Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. found cultivated in / around coffee plantations, in hill stations of South India. Locality: Yercaud, Tamil Nadu
Altitude: 4900 feet Habitat: Medium sized tree Approximate Height: 40 feet Date: 2nd August 2011 I compared the web photos of A. Fraxinifolius (pink cedar) with my photo. The leaves and leaf venation look quite different. The inflorescence also seems much longer. Will await more info.
Looks like Erythrina variegata (syn. E.indica). However, I am not sure which is the valid name : E.indica or E.variegata. Please check. It is a species of Erythrina of Leguminosae family. Erythrina variegata generally don’t have leaves when flowering. They usually flower when all the leaves shed. This species seems to be a species of Erythrina that flowers in the monsoon (picture date 2nd August 2011) whereas E. varigata flowers in the summer.
Please describe me about the nature of thorns on the plant; whether they are all over the tree including trunk, branches and branch-lets or otherwise.
I do not recall thorns being present all over the tree. I must confess, however, that I had not observed the tree closely enough. I am sending one more photograph which I had taken. Hope it helps. As per the plantlist.org Erythrina variegata is the valid name and not E. indica. No, not during the monsoon. It is after the monsoon. Got some nice pictures last year with plenty of birds on it. The second photo shows an Oriental White-eye and the third photograph shows a pair of Leafbirds belonging to Chloropsis genus. The leaf birds are golden fronted leaf birds. it is wild and that is why it attracts birds and animals. I have birds, butterflies, deers of two kinds, elephants, giant Malabar squirrels, and what have you? Please find the plant ID for link below: Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr.

This appears to be E. indica but I think it is a bad choice for a roadside tree given the easily broken branches. Thank you very much … for the possibility of E. indica. efi page on Erythrina variegata (syn. Erythrina indica Lam.) This should be Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. … thanks to … post and … response put in some earlier posts.

This could be E. suberosa. attaching more pictures of the same tree. Yes, could be E. suberosa. For me it is Erythrina suberosa I think it is Erythrina stricta As far as I know E. stricta has glabrous leaves and petioles. These later pics show some pubescence. I think it should be Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. as per images herein.

Flower for id pl.
Location – Baratang Island, Andaman Date – Jan 2019 Erythrina Species?
Erythrina sp. yes but which one for the last five hours i have been vacillating between the obvious: the indian coral tree : erythrina indica. foi also shows a stamp on which is this leaf that matches the case here and second is a hybrid developed in australia or new zealand of our tree: Erythrina sykesii. it was hybridized to make their seeds sterile, but the tree proagates vegetatively it seems, and now they want to eradicate it from australia/.. pheww!! i would vote for e. indica
Also check for E.caffra. A guess. encouraging Petal shape is more roundish. Doesn’t match with E.indica. May be E.caffra as suggested by … Erythrina subumbrans (Hassk.) Merr. ?? Looks close. Can’t differentiate between E.caffra and E.subumbrans leaves. Confused….. We have only one species in efi with lots of observations from South India and Sri Lanka as per /species/a—l/f/fabaceae/erythrina/erythrina-subumbrans
To me your post appears close. Thanks … I checked the efi and the discussion from the link. Possibility of E.subumbrans is much higher.
