Very beautiful set of photographs. esp Lactuca-scariola-Balgarden-Kashmir-3-DSC06662.jpg and the one showing dehiscence. Never seen something like this before.Thank you… for mentioning the word. I was waiting for someone to mention it so that I can share my appreciation too as I did not know how to describe it. Thanks a lot … The last photograph is very useful for this group of asteraceae. In fact one can identify the plant only from this. Here is my paper on this published in 1972. Thank you Sir ji for the paper. Very nice paper on key to the genera based on achene characters. And yes today I learned a new word in Botany ‘achene’ meaning single-seeded fruits . …, interestingly it is not achene in the real sense, but a term very commonly used in this family. The fruit type is actually cypsella (formed from two united carpels with inferior ovary, dry fruit containing single seed). The real achene is found in Ranunculaceae in Ranunculus, Anemone, Clematis, etc. carpels are free and single seeded dry fruit is formed from single carpel. In other genera, Delphinium, Aquilegia, etc., each free carpel contains more than one ovule, and fruit matures into follicle.
