Lactuca serriola from Kashmir: Lactuca serriola L., Cent. pl. II:29. 1756 (Amoen. acad. 4:328. 1759)

syn: Lactuca scariola L.; Lactuca augustana All.
Common name: Prickly lettuce
Tall prickly herb reaching 1.5 m, branched, prickly towards base; leaves sessile, pinnatifid with toothed segmrnts pointing downwards, prickly on midrib and nerves beneath, upper leaves stem-clasping with arrow-shaped base; heads yellow, 9-12 mm in diam., in long panicles with spreading branches; involucre bracts oblong; achene brown nearly 3 mm long with slender almost as long longer beak, pappus hairs white.

Very common in Kashmir valley in wastelands, borders of fields and road sides, photographed from Balgarden and University Campus in August.

Very beautiful set of photographs. esp Lactuca-scariola-Balgarden-Kashmir-3-DSC06662.jpg and the one showing dehiscence. Never seen something like this before.Thank you… for mentioning the word. I was waiting for someone to mention it so that I can share my appreciation too as I did not know how to describe it.

Thanks a lot … The last photograph is very useful for this group of asteraceae. In fact one can identify the plant only from this. Here is my paper on this published in 1972.

Thank you Sir ji for the paper. Very nice paper on key to the genera based on achene characters. And yes today I learned a new word in Botany ‘achene’ meaning single-seeded fruits .

…, interestingly it is not achene in the real sense, but a term very commonly used in this family. The fruit type is actually cypsella (formed from two united carpels with inferior ovary, dry fruit containing single seed). The real achene is found in Ranunculaceae in Ranunculus, Anemone, Clematis, etc. carpels are free and single seeded dry fruit is formed from single carpel. In other genera, Delphinium, Aquilegia, etc., each free carpel contains more than one ovule, and fruit matures into follicle.

Very nice pappus.. nice to be able to hold and it not fly away from the slight breeze created by breathing …

ASTERACEAE Fortnight Part 3-Ligulate Heads: Lactuca serriola from Uttarakhand_DSR_12 : Attachments (3).  3 posts by 2 authors.
Lactuca serriola L. is a common and fast spreading weed in
Pantnagar
.
Flower heads open for short duration in morning and wither later.

Very nice illustrative photographs. I liked the last picture of the achene showing different parts clearly.

Thank you …. Achenes are important in most of the cases for identification in Asteraceae.

Yes … Here is my old paper on that

This fast spreading weed was shot from near Panipat in month of May..
I hope this is Lactuca serriola..
the plant bears small spines all over the stem and leaves, contains latex, I could not capture open heads, perhaps they open for a short period..
