An erect shrub about 5-15 ft tall. Stem brownish grey, young branchlets with hairs. Leaves opposite, lanceolate-elliptical, 1-6 x 1-2.5 cm across, sometimes leaves in first pair are variable, which are smaller and ovate, shining, glabrous or hairy above and hairy beneath, mid vein more prominent below, 4-12 lateral veins on either side of the midvein, veinlets reticulate, base rounded, margin entire to slightly undulate, apex acuminate, petiole about 1-2 mm long. Flowers in short pubescent, peduncled pairs, zygomorphic, bracts glabrous about 3-4 mm long, bracteoles copular, paired flowers 2 calyx tubes separate, lobes ovate, Calyx limb tubular, margin irregular, Corolla shortly elongate and gibbous at the base, 5 lobed. Corolla tube narrow funnel shaped, base very gibbous, slightly pubescent, lobes about 0.5 cm obtuse, yellowish white in color. Stamens 5, anthers bilobed. Style exserted as long as corolla, hairy, 3-fid at the extremity. Ovaries free or half-coalescent in bud; fruits berry usually confluent into a single small spherical fruit, purplish-red, black when ripe, juicy, about 4-5 mm in diameter, supported by boat shaped membranous bracteoles.
