Oberonia recurva flowering: – Oberonias are very tricky, and hence I cant confirm from myside without seeing a good picture of the lip. I I need to see closeup of flowers. Cant confirm with these pics. I guess the ID is OK. .
Kaas Week : Oberonia recurva: Not sure about the id but thanks for sharing. May be … will throw some light on this 🙂 The flowers are not in bloom here. Plants with greenish flowers would be O. falconeri and with brick red flowers would be O. recurva. We have to go with both possibilities here. Actually I have seen yellow red flowers in falconeri too. I can observed at first greenish yellow than yellow and latter reddish in falconeri. Colour is just a superficial ID. If flowers could be seen in close ups then midlobe of lip equal to side lobes is O. recurva. midlobe of lip 4-5 times larger than side lobes is O. falconeri.
Both sp.can be found at Kas. I request members to dig out their close ups for both sp. Yes you are right sir, colour is depends on sunlight also……. No guesses in this case….. Lip of Oberonia is the one of the deciding factors… Difficult genus to even comment on….. There is a problem. I dont agree with the key given by respected … agreeing with …, Lip is the deciding factor in genus Oberonia. Me too have observed too many variations in their colour and size. I could collect both greenish and brownish forms of Oberonia chandrasekharanii, O. mucronata from Wayanad. Yes, flower is essential for identification of the genus Oberonia…. Count me if you can: You will be surprised. I was in Pokhara, Nepal in 2003 for an international conference. Outside the hotel there was a Peepal tree. Me, Dr. C.Sathish Kumar, Dr. Sarat Misra and Mr. U.C.Pradhan counted nearly 18 species of epiphytic orchids on that tree. Oberonia falconeri Hook.f. ?? .
Cant confirm without seeing proper floral structure. Which place is sorry, I didnt see properly that it was from Kas! Sorry for the picture without adequate details. Oberonias are observed in Kas so I was badly searching on trees But Sachin Punekar told me it’s too early to see the full flowers. Luckily I could see this one. Not aware which species are found there. You may visit it next sunday, you can see the blooms. You can find this specially on the trees when u are descending the steps to Thoseghar waterfalls… Could find couple of them there…. By any chance …, do you have pictures of open flowers? Yours is much clearer. However, sending mine as well… Even i hv captured it from Kas and want to know species..but flowers were not open, we have it in Amboli too It is Oberonia species, belongs to orchidaceae family. Thanks for the information, just one addition, you are absolutely right, may be you meant it that way and I misunderstood. In India itself this genus is represented by 52 species including two varieties. And then there are few new species coming from here and there. For people engaged in Tantra activities it is not less than a boon. In my database I have information about 21 formulations in which it is used as main ingredient. Are you talking about all species in general or some specific ones … sir? Specific information will be in the proposed book on Medicinal Orchids. 😉 dont worry I will not practice tantra….just kidding…. Not sure if there are more than one species at Kas, attached are photos of Oberonia falconeri (my belief) … … this is two years back, 28 SEP 08 at Kas. Yes your plant could possibly be Oberonia falconeri. But cant confirm Oberonia recurva Oberonia falconeri Hook.f. ??
