Flora of Uttarakhand- Potentilla sp for Id- JM (mixed thread): 6 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (4)
Wild Herb captured on 13/8/10 during the trek from Ghangaria (around 11,000 ft.) to Hemkunt Sahib (around 14000 ft.).

The first red flower is not Potentilla rather it is Geum elatum Wall. ex G. Don, ; Gen. Syst. 2: 526 (1832).

First post is of Potentilla atrosanguinea.

Real mix up

First two Geum elatum

next two Potentilla atrosanguinea
Next two (white flowers) Fragraria nubicola

My id was for the first four pics which still seems to me as Potentilla atrosanguinea. Cant speak of Geum without leaves.
Next two pics are Fragaria sp.

DV :: 02 AUG 12 – 0825 :: red ¿ Potentilla ? at Valley of Flowers:
2 AUG 12
Valley of Flowersabout 11000 – 12000 ft
Habitat: sloping meadow
Habit: erect herb about 75 cm high, flower 20 – 25 mm across

It could be Potentilla atrosanguinea.

Most likely Potentilla argyrophylla var. atrosanguinea (if leaves have 3 leaflets)
Geum elatum also has similar flowers which are yellow or sometimes red. Leaves are different there.

Perhaps lower leaves have to be investigated. The leaves seen look much different from larger, silky, cut leaflets of atrosanguinea.

…, the last picture is the only photo showing long shot.
The original sized picture can be viewed at Flickr though I am afraid it covers lower leaves.
Apologies for not covering the basal leaves – perhaps due to intent of covering more distance and more plants.

I thought it as Potentilla atrosanguinea.
Can’t say anything more as the discussion has reached beyond my knowledge

Just to complete…Obviously Family Rosaceae

Many thanks to … for validating the ID as Potentilla atrosanguinea G.Lodd. … facebook.

Potentilla argyrophylla  ??

To me looks different from images at Potentilla atrosanguinea var. argyrophylla

Potentilla atrosanguinea var. atrosanguinea

.

Potentilla atrosanguinea / atrosanguinea:

I have some confusion about these two sps.

https://www.flowersofindia.net/Ruby%20Cinquefoil.html
https://www.flowersofindia.net/Silverleaf%20Cinquefoil.html

Correction : Potentilla argyrophylla / atrosanguinea

What is the confusion, …?

I think this intermixing of images is due to changing synonymy of the two species. Earlier P. atrosanguinea was considered to be a variety of Potentilla argyrophylla (Potentilla argyrophylla var. atrosanguinea). So, if one is not going to the level of subspecies, one would treat images of both as Potentilla argyrophylla. Flora of China has given the distinction between the two:
1Petals, stamens, and styles yellow.56a var. argyrophylla
+Petals basally, stamens, and styles purple.6b var. atrosanguinea
In my understanding, P. atrosanguinea has red flowers, and P. argyrophylla has yellow flowers. It is also obvious from the etymology: atrosanguinea means dark red.
Meanwhile the image of P. atrosanguinea on POWO shows a pink flower, and is probably P. nepalensis.
The photos of P. argyrophylla on POWO should all belong to P. atrosanguinea (not the herbarium images).
You should also know how images of live plants are added in POWO and GBIF – images are commonly taken from iNaturalist. But quite often an image gets wrongly identified on iNaturalist by more than one person, and is marked “Research Grade”, and qualifies to be added to POWO/GBIF. So, images of live plants on POWO and GBIF should be treated with caution.

Yes, … That is the most confusing parts. Some pictures and herbarium images are uploaded wrongly in databases which creates confusion. I have written to GBIF for many wrong pics and herbarium images for correction but they reply it is the responsibility of the person uploading the images, not the database organisation. Surprising.
