Coprinellus disseminatus (also Coprinus disseminatus; “Fairies Bonnets” or “Trooping Crumble Cap“) is a species of mushroom in the Psathyrellaceae family. Unlike most other Coprinoid mushrooms, C. disseminatus does not dissolve into black ink (deliquesce) in maturity. The species was given its current name in 1939 by Jakob Emanuel Lange.[1]

The mushroom is edible but not worth eating. [2]

–  Yes this should be Coprinellus disseminatus owing to the gills which are adnate.

– Congrats for the very nice pixs of mushrooms with the close up of the undersurface. This is the way all fungi should be covered. This definitely help in the correct identification of the form. Yes, it is Coprinellus disseminatus (Pers.: Fr.) SF Gray (Coprinaceae) Coprinus disseminatus and Pseudocoprinus disseminatus as synonyms.
It is small conical agaric, massed distinctively on stumps of trees and spreading to adjacent soil. Cap is pallid buff or clay with greyish tinge. Flesh thin, fragile but not auto digesting as in most Coprinus sp.
It is edible i.e. not poisonous but worthless.

Bengali name given in a booklet – KAALI CHATU, provided the ID is correct.

efi species so far:  Coprinus

Seems to match my posting of Coprinellus disseminates.

I agree that the pictures in this post looks very very similar to yours. In fact i should have left the ID as Coprinus (or Coprinellus) sp. only.
Not only the above, the pictures in following sites also seem to suggest this as C. disseminatus –
  1. up to 4 cm = C. disseminatus
  2. u to 8 (8.5) cm = C. micaceus
The picture, P1040987.jpg has more than 4 cm stipe. Perhaps the community has members with longer stipes.
Please also note that in my another post from the same dead and rotten stump, at https://groups.google.com/indiantreepix/OKDicob8DqQ, the mushroom has stipe more thick than C. disseminatus.
So, i think this is C. micaceus.
