Perennial herbs, up to 80 cm tall; stem erect, quadrangular, with lax white patent hairs. Leaves ovate, decurrent, laxly hairy, 6.4 cm long, 4 cm wide, apex acuminate, base obtuse or triangular. Spikes 5-13 cm long, solitary, simple; flowering sessile; bracts sessile, elliptic, ca. 12 mm long, 6 mm wide, green, entire, truncate, exceeding the calyx at the base, caducous; calyx subequally deeply 5-lobed to base, segments narrow; corolla purple, tubular-ventricose, curved above, ca. 1.7 cm long, glabrous with a few scattered lax hairs towards the apex; limb lobes subequal, orbicular; stamens 4, didynamous, anthers oblong, 2-celled, muticous; ovary 4-ovulate, style linear, stigma of one long linear-lanceolate branch, the other suppressed. Thank you for correcting ID. Yes, I think this is correctly Strobilanthes lachenenensis. The picture is not so helpful as those sent by … which show the habit of the plant and the complete inflorescence. These are usually very important in identifying the different species. Sharing some pictures of Strobilanthes atropurpureus shot at Nagarkot Nepal on 13 August 2016 at 6800 ft. Strobilanthes attenuata as per … as per another thread:Strobilanthes atropurpureus ABAUG01/14 I am not sure what this is but it is not Strobilanthes atropurpurea, which has a glabrous corolla. It might be S. lachenensis (which is very variable) but I am doubtful. The altitude suggests that is a good possibility.
Adding some more images from same location same date as you have advised for further scrutiny! I think this is a form of Strobilanthes lachenensis. It is not Strobilanthes atropurpurea which has a glabrous corolla and subequal calyx lobes. The plant in the photographs has a hairy corolla and one calyx lobe is clearly longer than the others.
Strobilanthes lachenensis is very variable in size and inflorescence development and I have puzzled over some specimens in the past (see my comments in Edinburgh Journal of Botany 51 (2): 246 in 1994) but without seeing a specimen this is my best guess at the identity of these photographs.
I know S. lachenensis and S. attenuata hybridise when cultivated together and some of the variation might be explained by hybridization with another Strobilanthes species growing in the same area.

Pl. try comparative images at genus page, if you can find a match with these images: Note the hairy corolla. I think this is Strobilanthes lachenensis, which is quite variable, but it is an odd example, if I am correct in my identification.

I have a couple more I need ID help with this one below. Strobilanthes lamiifolia (Nees) T. Anderson I do not think matches with images at Strobilanthes lamiifolia I guess Strobilanthes lachenensis C.B.Clarke ! Definitely not Strobilanthes lamiifolia. Might be Strobilanthes lachenensis but not sure. Any photo of flowers? of the plant? Any altitude or location detail? I am attaching a photo of the plant with flowers.

Looks like Strobilanthes atropurpurea to me. I don’t think this is S. atropurpurea – the corolla is hairy and sepals are not right.
I Think SK2817 is Strobilanthes lachenensis.

In the second photo, one vegetative part with oval shaped leaves is present along with some Hydrocotyle species, Is it the part of this Acanthaceae? No it is not from the same plant ! Only one Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees is listed in Nepal but but does not seem matching. Can anyone solve the mystery of this plant ? This is one of the Strobilanthes spp., frequent in middle hills. Sometimes leaves and young branches turn purplish brown. I feel it is some Acanthaceae member, may be Strobilanthes which have flowering twigs of previous growing season. I agree that it is probably a species of Strobilanthes but would not like to guess which one. … do you know what species grow in the vicinity? I have shot images of Strobilanthes lamiifolia (Nees) T. Anderson and Strobilanthes lachenensis in that locality ! Have a look at Strobilanthes lachenensis. Is that a possibility? A friend has just shown me images of Strobilanthes lachenensis with the same dark purplish winter leaves so I guess this evidence gives added support to the suggestion that the plant in your images is Strobilanthes lachenensis. . Habit : Wild Strobilanthes … ????? I think this is Strobilanthes lachenensis C.B.Clarke but I would really need to see a picture with leaves and habit to be certain. That was my guess as well … Unfortunately, I have only these images. .

I think it is Strobilanthes lachenensis but I would like some time to consider other possibilities. Strobilanthes pentstemonoides (Nees) T. Anderson var. pentstemonoides. according to …! Assuming this is from Nepal, It has to be a form of Strobilanthes lachenensis. Note the corolla is pubescent on the exterior (wrong for pentstemonoides), the sepals are glandular-pilose and the infloresence is lax.
Strobilanthes glutinosa can look similar but the flowers are pale blue and the inflorescence is different – it also flowers in mid winter. . SK 3858 18 September 2023: 12 high res. images. Location: Phulchoki, Lalitpur, Nepal
