The staminal cup differentiates it from Chlorophytum. C. bharchae is a plant of dry rocky hils. This flower is about 6 cm and it is the rare Pancratium parvum. It blooms on first shower in June

Oh so early……. Great!! We can count the days it takes for monsoon from its blooming time.
Though it may not be related, Pre-monsoon showers might be the only stimulus for the blooms(?)

Pancratium parvum (Forest Spider Lily):   On 28/6/09 in Chilkur NP, Hyderabad. These were sprouting with the coming of the rains.

Excellent photographs of Pancratium triflorum
The bifid teeth of the staminal tube are also well seen.

pancratium parvum – first wild flower seen after the first shower : Attachments (6).  13 posts by 11 authors.

… and I had been to the forest at CEC, Goregaon, Mumbai today (7.6.10) morning and we saw the flower of Spider lily, the first wild flower seen immediately after the first few showers.
I have attached the pics of Spider lily
local name :पाणकुसुम
Bot. name : Pancratium parvum )
family Amaryllidaceae
It is a perennial herb endemic to Western Ghats from the family of Amaryllidaceae, which includes Nargis flower. These large, white, fragrant and short lived flowers often appear before the leaves. Stamens are enclosed in a staminal cup (the stamens are fused to form a large cup, known as “staminal cup”.
Etymology:
From the Greek pankratos = strength and Parvum = Small.
My query is : the plant is delicate and flowers are large. then why the plant’s bot. name is pancratium parvum?

Lovely set of photographs !! the closeups are awesome

Thanks … For showing this comparatively rare lily. Many a times people confuse Hymenocallis plants for this.

as per Dr.Almeida’s book
pan=all kraty=potent A potent medicinal plant Powerful medicinal plant. It is also an old Greek name used by Dioscorides.
excellant picturs!

thanx very much.
i had referred to the site of Dave’s garden for Etymology

why ‘parvum’ when the flowers r large?

Yes indeed very nicely illustrated staminal corona.

Would like to know the difference between P. parvum and P. triflorum.
From FOI:
P. parvum … the flowers, often appear before leaves, stamens enclosed in slender cup
P. triflorum … the flowers appear with the leaves, the small staminal cup with toothed fringe.
…, have listed photos … their ending file-names

…. these to me seem P. triflorum, but may be mistaking.

I think … observations are correct. Comparing both the species with … book I too feel the ones mentioned by Dinesh ji are P. triflorummain distinguishing feature being the staminal cup with bifid teeth betweeen short filaments. Lets hear from others

I think these pictures are of Pancratium triflorum, as pointed out by … The book Flowers of Sahyadri illustrates the two species well.
The stamens are enclosed by a conical structure formed by a membranethis structure is very narrow in P. parvum whereas in P. triflorum it is wide and its margin is cut into teeth.

Could you please identify this fragrant flower. Location: Girawali, Ghodegao.

Wild lily. Certain kind of tube rose or atamasco lily ?

Looks like a Pancratium or Hymenocallis species. If wild can be Pancratium.

Yeoor Hills after pre monsoon showers for wild flowers. :  Mixed thread- 1 correct image.  5 posts by 5 authors.

After the pre monsoon showers the Forest Spider Lily blooms in the hills of Yeoor, SGNP Thane. These flowers bloom first before the leafs. I was planning for many years to see this unique phenomenon and it happened this year. Along with these Lilies the Yellow Ground Star aka Kali Musali flowers too had come up at the base of the shoots. Submitting the pictures for correct ID too.

Wow, Nice set of photographs. The first photograph is really beautiful.

Excellent postings. You have great potential to post more pictures and interact as an expert. All the best.

Pancratium species is Pancratium triflorum Roxb.
