I think you are right … But change the family name as Annonaceae.

I think this is Miliusa tomentosa (Roxb.) Sincl. Annonaceae Syn: Uvaria tomentosa.

Ya, Saccopetalum tomentosum is the (popular) synonym of Miliusa tomentosa. http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?32638

Common name is Humb.

Nice find and beautiful photographs. I remember spotting one of the Humb tree at Karnala but never seen it flowering. Thanks … for sharing.

Sorry to disappointing you. I doubted mixing up in your photographs. The leaf underside, leaf and fruits photographs are definitely not Miliusa tomentosa or Annonaceae. It must be Lauraceae!!!
Kindly check.

… the mistaken photos are of Alseodaphne semicarpifolia. Many thanks for pointing to the error.

Regarding the Kannada name ಕರಿ ಹೆಸ್ಸರೆ kari hessare, I am of the opinion that ಕರಿ ಹೆಸರೆ ಮರ kari hesare mara as mentioned in  Catalogue of Plants in the Botanical Garden, Bangalore, and its vicinity, is more appropriate. Hence, I suggest that you may choose the names ಕರಿ ಹೆಸರೆ kari hesare ಕರಿ ಹೆಸರೆ ಮರ kari hesare mara. Nevertheless, it is left to your choice.

Yes, sure, I will change the name shortly, to the more appropriate – ಕರಿ ಹೆಸರೆ kari hesare.

Just for sake of curiosity, what would the name mean ? Literal translation seems to be “black name” OR “charred name”. I ask because this tree does not have any name given in English; thus was thinking if we could coin a name from a regional name. I am aware that ಕರಿ and ಹೆಸರೆ on their own, have various meanings.

Annonacea of north Western Ghats (Maharashtra) – Miliusa tomentosa : Attachments (4). 6 posts by 5 authors.

As part of the ongoing fortnight I will be posting a series of species belonging to Annonaceae, distributed in the Western Ghats. I will start with the species distributed in North Western Ghats of Maharashtra and then progress down south through Goa and Karnataka and eventually end with Kerala and Tamilnadu, covering species distributed in these parts in the order of their occurrence from North to South.
Starting with Miliusa tomentosa. These pictures have been taken at various localities and therefore I am not putting the date and place.
I would greatly appreciate if you guys can chip in with additional species that I may have missed or distribution information or anything else that is missing.

Thanks, …, for promising to take us through the wonderful journey.
I am astonished at these wonderful photographs. Never new you are such a wonderful photographer too along with being a good taxonomist.

Beautiful images and wonderful documentation, …!
It will be useful if you add dates particularly for flowers and fruits to know the season. The location will also be useful since one does not see these plants very often in the Sahyadri.

Thanks to my mother for giving me a very expensive photography equipment at a very yound age and thanks to Shrikant Ingalhalikar who taught me the wonderful technique of photographing plants

ANDEC01/01 Miliusa sp. for identification : 4 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (7)

Family: Annonaceae
Date: 27th December 2015
Place: Makalidurga, Bangalore District, Karnataka

Habit: Tree
Habitat: Scrub forest

Is this species Miliusa tomentosa (Roxb.) Sinclair or Miliusa velutina (Dunal) Hook.f. & Thomson?

In my opinion Miliusa tomentosa (Roxb.) Baill. ex Finet & Gagnep. This combination was first made in 1906 which takes precedence and again done by Sinclair much later in 1955. Good shots.

Very good shots indeed

Id please .. of a medium size tree, found At Bavdhan Hill (Pune, Maharashtra).
Fruits were seen, no flowers.

Is this Miliusa tomentosa (Annonaceae)??

check again and post with clear information, what you sent pics both are individual sp., not belong to one sp. first pic. has a compound lea and the second one is a simple leaf what you sent Miliusa,

Yes, I checked today. these are two different trees.
Attaching photographs of fruits of the one with compound leaves.
The other one with simple leaves is probably Miliusa tomentosa.

There is utter confusion. Please post this new plant pictures in a separate posting. However looking at the fruits and leaves it could be a species of Cordia ???

No … None of them is Miliusa tomentosa (Roxb.) J.Sinclair as per images and details herein.

On further scrutiny, I found only Bavdhan_190520_2.JPG is of Miliusa tomentosa (Roxb.) J.Sinclair as per images and details herein.

I don’t think Miliosa is reported from Pune. Please keep follow up to find the trimerous flowers. Take photographs of leaves and fruits clearly

uploading some fresh pics taken today at Bavdhan hill, of the same tree as in ‘Bavdhan_190520_2.JPG’ from my earlier post.
Many such trees are found on the hill. Even found a cluster of around 11 such trees on the slopes.
Please confirm the id.

I guess it is close to Miliusa velutina (DC.) Hook.f. & Thomson with distribution in MP.

Thanks, … Fruit wise, I find it more closer to Miliusa tomentosa (Roxb.) J.Sinclair rather than  Miliusa velutina (A.DC.) Hook.f. & Thomson as per images and details herein.
