India (Orissa; cultivated elsewhere), Bangladesh (I) as per Catalogue of Life;
Distribution: Hooker (1882) noted that it was difficult to give a natural distribution for this species as it is widely cultivated all over India. I have seen only two collections, Haines 4877 and Haines 4880, which would seem to have been collected in the wild. These were both collected near Puri in Orissa in India) as per A revision of Aganosma (Blume) G. Don (Apocynaceae) by DAVID J. MIDDLETON’- Kew Bulletin, Vol. 51, No. 3 (1996), pp. 455-482.

Echites caryophylata:  This  very much looks like echites. But  even though the plant  is a year old it has not thrown any climber shoots. Is it a bush variety  or do I have to wait more for it to appear?

This may be Aganosma dichotoma (Synn: Echites caryophyllatta) of Apocynaceae family.
It seems that it is growing and unfortunately I am not known about the growth rate and pattern. Let us wait to get some light in this regard. http://www.flowersofindia.in/catalog/slides/Malati.html
I would send a published paper in Kew Bulletin in a separate mail

This is in continuation with the thread Echites caryophylata <http://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/t/98ba0f490c3ac107>

Please find attached herewith a Kew Bulletin publication that would be useful for this thread

Very beautiful pictures of Aganosma dichotoma!

If I remember correctly, though they look like (somewhat remotely to some) like one of the jui…
this flower has no scent… am I correct?

it has got very sweet smell.

Echytes caryophyllata_malati in bloom (in continuation):  This is in continuation to my previous  message in this regard. I had forgotten to reduce the size of the photographs. Enclosed are resized pictures.

Looks like Aganosma dichotoma, commonly known as ‘malathi’ of Apocyanaceae.

I have checked in Google. … is right in identifying the species as Aganosma dichotoma.

Yes it is Malathi in Coromandel with frgrant flowers cuktivated since the time of koenig at Kakinada..

Good one and new one for me … Would it be possible to indicate the location where it is seen at Rani Baug? Thanks.

… not familiar with names of internal locations, please check on attached piece of Google Earth,

Wow ! Thanks … Not too good at reading google maps, but I think this should towards the bird cages.

This plant is an extensive climber fairly common in gardens. BSI flora of Maharashtra gives A. caryophyllata G. Don, as the sc. name. Another local name is Lavang Latika.

Thanks for the additional info. … Must be mostly high up on trees.

I had spotted this at “Sagar Upwan” (MPT Garden near Sasoon Dock) also.

Scientifically this plant is Aganosma heynei.

Malati should be Aganosma dichotoma as per A revision of Aganosma (Blume) G. Don (Apocynaceae) by DAVID J. MIDDLETON’- Kew Bulletin, Vol. 51, No. 3 (1996), pp. 455-482 & as per Aganosma

Re: Plant id please : 1 post by 1 author.
I am a friend of … and upon his suggestion I am emailing you. I am in Kolkata since last 6 months. Can you please identify following plants? Photos are taken in & around Kolkata. I can provide you all details.
Is the plant in 3.jpg Clerodendrum viscosum ?

First, let me forward a copy of this mail to eFI, for it may help to identify one pending thread – https://groups.google.com/d/msg/indiantreepix/00a7cX2zQz4/0jtGwB7x360J
2nd, I haven’t seen the creeper, “Common crow_creeper1” and “Common crow_creeper2” yet, for as per ‘Bengal Plants’ it’s distribution is in Bihar region of the then Bengal. It is most probably Aganosma caryophyllata of ‘Flora of British India’. Since the photographs were taken in Kolkata it is quite possible the presence of this particular species there, for Bimal Da also has this one in North-Bengal. The present accepted name is a problem, for FoI think it is A. heynei; eFI thinks A. dichotoma while IBP thinks A. caryophyllata. It is a climber with leaves, usually with red nerves, 2-5 pairs secondary nerves (ref. Haines). You may like to check efi thread.
The “creeper” with prickly stem is a Smilax sp.; two spp are found in our region S. macrophylla roxb. and S. prolifera Roxb. (S. perfoliata); the two can be differentiated by presence/ absence of auricle at the base of petiole. Please check 1st photograph in efi thread. But the problem is leaves at the apical region of S. prolifera (Smilax perfoliata) are also non-auriculate like that of Smilax macrophylla. I would say it is Smilax perfoliata since it is very common here.
Yes, “3.jpg” is Clerodendrum but what would be the accepted name is unresolved yet, please check – efi thread 1 and also /species/a—l/l/lamiaceae/clerodendrum/clerodendrum-infortunatum
