Bagalore – RA – Schefflera Actinophylla – Octopus Tree:
Octopus Tree is an erect shrub or small tree growing up to 12 m tall. The tree grows with multiple trunks, each topped with a small crown of large showy leaves.
The compound leaves form an umbrella shaped rosette which gives the tree the common name Umbrella Tree. The flowers of this tree are even more amazing than the tree. Ten to fifteen long stalks of bright red flowers appear right on top of the tree. These racemes can be up to 2 m long. The flowers are followed by round dark berries.
Many people grow Octopus Tree as a house plant where it stays in a small, rarely exceeding a couple feet in height, and never blooming.
This tree has become one of the most popular of indoor house plants.
It is native to northern Australia and southeastern New Guinea.

Inflorescence: a broad panicle
Leaf: Palmate compound
Flower: small, red, 3-4 mm across, stamens 5

– Is it Schefflera actinophylla ?

– Yes .., I think you are right

– I would have been happy to photograph this threatened species endemic to Ganjam district, but I am afraid S. roxburghii has much longer petioles and petiolules and the flowers  are white or greenish white.

Schefflera venulosa var. venulosa and var. roxburghii, both are Jharkhand and I have seen one of them here in Uttarakhand and then Chattishgarh too and during my recent trip to south too.. Dont know the difference between them. Earlier var. roxburghii was actually a different species, S. roxburghii, and it is reported in the Flora of Madras Presidency.

– Kew List recognises S. roxburghii as recognised species with Schefflera venulosa var. roxburghii (Gamble) K.K.Khanna as its synonym.

I read that it is listed as threatened species.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schefflera_roxburghii

– So both Schefflera venulosa and S. roxburghii are accepted and both are found. Please recheck your link, it shows LEAST CONCERNED and not Threatened!!
Haines reported both plants from Bihar and Orissa and Clarke too. I have seen many plants but never could differentiate. Hence Schefflera venulosa cant be endemic to south India.

.

Revisiting Schefflera sp. 130311GS1 for ID from Delhi:
This plant was uploaded by me last year, and … suggested Schefflera venulosa var. roxburghii
efi thread
The species was described in Flora of British India under Heptapleurum venulosum, now placed under Schefflera with three accepted names, and our plant (as also one on Flowers of India as Schefflera elliptica) could belong to any of these three: Schefflera elliptica (Blume) Harms, Schefflera pubigera (syn: S. bengalensis Gamble) or S. roxburghii (S. venulosa var. roxburghii (Gamble) K K Khanna). Can any member help me with differences in these three species, and fix identity of this plant.

Attaching a collage of Schefflera actinophylla (UMBRELLA TREE/ OCTOPUS TREE). I saw this tree for the first time in Bangalore in 1994 and the flowers impressed me. In 1997 I got some saplings of this plant from Bangalore and put it in our garden. We saw the flowers of that tree in 2005. This tree can be propagated easily by cuttings. I put number of plants in different institutes at Cooch Behar and they are doing well. The flowers attract butterflies, sun birds and bees.

Fwd: OBSERVATION: PREFERENCE OF FLOWERS BY BEE : 2 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (5)
I am working on symbiosis (flowers/ butterflies/ bee) for more than ten years. I find bees prefer flowers of Schefflera actinophylla (UMBRELLA TREE/ OCTOPUS TREE) over other flowers. At present the following plants are in bloom in the area of my observation,
( a ) Saraca asoca (ASHOK)
( b ) Schefflera actinophylla
( c ) Clerodendrum speciosum
( d ) Santalum album (CHANDAN)
( e ) Aerides odorata (Orchid)
( f ) Lagerstroemia indica (CRAPE MYRTLE)
But I find bees are visiting flowers of Schefflera actinophylla in large number but the other flowers have hardly any visitor.
Attaching five collages of the event.

here is some evidence that some constituents of the nectar like nicotine like or caffeine like substances make the honey bee remember a plant for up to three days.

there are scientific papers, but here is a news item i can get on the net to read in toto
i thought you may like to know.
Another buzz for bees

Blooms are more memorable when their nectar contains caffeine

https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/article/another-buzz-bees
I have searched extensively to find if schefflera flower nectar contains caffeine

or such chemical compound, but have not made any headway yet.
but most plants that make such compounds put them first in the roots or leaves, so to save them from being eaten, because they are then bitter.
some bitter nectar makes the bees fly off and search for another flower on the same tree, hoping to find sweet only nectar.
that’s the theory.
Interesting conundrum.
