efloraindia: 221011 BRS 74: Aristolochia elegans bud, flower and seed photos are attached herewith. (May 2011)

I think we used to call them Badak in Marathi (Duck).

In the house of my aunt there was a big climber right in the entrance.
No aunt, no house, no ducks anymore.

Kindly help me to identify the plant collected from Aurangbad

This is Aristolochia elegans.

Common name Calico Flower.

It looks like Aristolochia species

Yes it is Aristolochia sp.

The species forwarded to me is Aristolochia littoralis Parodi.

Could be Aristolochia gigantea.

This is Aristolochia species. In all probablities it is Aristolochia elegans.

I think Aristolochia littoralis Parodi. Family: Aristolochiaceae.

It is Aristolochia littoralis. I have also photographed it from Botanical Garden’s green house, Warsaw.

TMC Biodiversity Park  Thane

Date: April 22, 2018 … Altitude: about 15 m (50 feet) asl
Aristolochia gigantea  Mart.

We do not have this species in efi site.
It looks similar to Aristolochia elegans Mast. in efi site.
Pl. check.

Checked leaves of both species; they look alike. Let us wait for flowering.

ID of Aristolochia gigantea got from the gardener.

Will return to the post when I find this plant in flowering. Had gone with gardener’s ID.

I could get the differences between the closely elated species from Lucid Central as below:
Dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia elegans) is similar to several closely related introduced species that have also become naturalised in Australia, including pelican flower (Aristolochia grandiflora), fragrant Dutchman’s pipe (Arsitolochia odoratissima) and gaping Dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia ringens). It is also very similar to the cultivated giant dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia gigantea) which is often confused with pelican flower (Aristolochia grandiflora) in the horticultural industry. These species can be distinguished by the following differences:
  • Dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia elegans) has a small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk. Its flowers are relatively large and broad (up to 7.5 cm long and 10 cm wide) and its relatively large fruit (4-6 cm long and about 2.5 cm wide) are oblong in shape with a short projection (about 10 mm long) at the tip.
  • giant dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia gigantea ) does not have a small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk. Its flowers are very large and broad (up to 30 cm long and 20 cm wide) and its relatively large fruit (up to 8 cm long and 3 cm wide) are oblong in shape with a very short projection at the tip.
  • pelican flower (Aristolochia grandiflora) does not have a small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk. Its flowers are very large (up to 25 cm long) with a very elongated projection at the base of the flower (i.e. appendix) 20-50 cm long. Its very large fruit are oblong in shape (about 10 cm long and 4-6 cm wide).
  • fragrant Dutchman’s pipe (Arsitolochia odoratissima) has a small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk. Its flowers are relatively large and broad (6-12 cm wide) and its moderately large fruit (4.5-8 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide) are oblong in shape and slightly curved.
  • gaping Dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia ringens) has a small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk. Its flowers are relatively large and narrow (10-25 cm long) and are split into an upper and lower lobe.

Thanks … The posted plant, clearly has a conspicuous ear-like structure (auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk. Thus, as per keys, will be not A. gigantea.

I suggest we also pay heed to the fruits which are different looking among the above listed species.

Will return to this post when I find the plant in flowering as well as fruiting.

Thanks … for the keys and analysis.

Updating this post with the concluded ID … Aristolochia elegans Mast. … as per discussion in another post.

Waiting for flower …

🙂 Yes … I have not been lately to this park. I have however seen flowering of Aristolochia elegans in another garden of Thane, and posted its pictures in this post. The chief gardener takes care of both parks. But some day I hope to get pictures of flowers from this site.

Aristolochia gigantea  Mart.

Yes, appears close as per keys and images at

On further checking, I see some small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk, in some of the leaves. Pl. check.
If so, it should be Aristolochia elegans as per images and details herein.

Yes …, the plants at Dattaji Salvi Udyan as well as TMC Biodiversity Park, both are having small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk – thus would be Aristolochia elegans as per keys.

Aristolochia gigantea in FOI : 7 posts by 2 authors.
Aristolochia gigantea in FOI id may not be correct as per differences/ keys at the bottom at Lucid Central.

The size of the flower seems to be quite large here – see the first pic on FOI with large branch/trunk of a tree in the background.  With that size, Aristolochia gigantea and Aristolochia grandiflora are possibilities. I have attached a picture showing the fruit, which is from the second pic on FOI. P.S. Sivaprasad may provide more input on it.

As per Lucid Central link: giant dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia gigantea ) does not have a small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk, which I see in your site.

Pl. correct.

It has not been corrected so far.

ID Pls Aristolochia indica ? SET 1 ? or SET 2 ? or BOTH ?: (missed thread): 2 correct images as above.
ID confusion … which one is Aristolochia indica ? or both are Aristolochia indica?? SET 1 or SET 2 ?? confused ….

Set1 is A. elegans and Set2 can not be IDd with just leaves, need flowers to confirm.

At least three species of Aristolochia are mixed up in these pictures. Please separate them and repost in separate mails.
The picture labeled as “SET 1 – ID Pls – is it Aristolochia indica (2).jpg” was taken by … of FRLHT, Bangalore.

I am searching for this plant but confused ! my local nursery said SET 1 – ID Pls – is it Aristolochia indica (1).jpg is A.I.
but in central park , saltlake , kolkata , they said – SET 2 pics (pics taken there by myself) are A.I.
I need this plant for my Butterfly Garden.

For butterfly garden almost all species of Aristolochia can be used.

Picture 1 and Picture 3 are Aristolochia elegans. Picture 2 is Aristolochia indica.
Rest are different I assume.

Picture 4 is Aristolochia tomentosa.

BEAUTIFUL FLOWERING VINE AT CHANDIGARH’S NAGAR VAN : 12 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (2)
Could the members of this esteemed group help confirm the identify of a beautiful flower growing on a vine at the City Forest/Nagar Van, Chandigarh.
The vine is currently in bloom and was identified by a flower enthusiast as Aristolochia elegans.

Yes sir it is Aristolochia elegans

Looking at only 2 images it looks more like A. elegans.

I’m sorry. I was typing while not quite awake. I meant to type A. grandiflora. I apologize for any confusion this may cause.

Thanks for the cues on ID.
Could the members assist in shedding light on two possible aspects of this vine of the Aristolochia:
1. Since it is an exotic, does it count among the invasive species that stifle or overwhelm native Indian species of flora?
2. Does this vine ultimately ‘choke’ the tree or sap its strength, i.e., is this vine a parasitic plant?

I’m not certain if it is A. elegans or A. grandiflora.
That being said, A. elegans escaped cultivation and is considered to be an agricultural weed in Australia and in the Southern U.S. Also look for printed information using the synonym A. littoralis.
In the Himalyas it has the ability to displace the native A. acuminata and A. indica and A. manchuriensis.
Certain butterflies depend on the native A. vines and the A. elegans has the ability to kill/poison the butterflies.

… you are right. Difficult to say without side views and some measurements.
I don’t see a tail…. rules out A. grandiflora

These are the pitfalls of mom and pop photography based diagnosis

Thank you for the guidance.
Is there any research paper on the vine’s toxicity, invasive capabilities, its occurence and impact in India?

Thanks, … for the id.
I also think it should be Aristolochia elegans Mast. as per keys at Lucid Central and comparative images at Aristolochia

Am attaching 3 photos of 2 climbers. This was sent to me by a person who forgot which is what?
Please try to help. I have marked the plants 1 and 2 for your convenience.

Tinospora cordifolia

Thank you for your reply. Appreciate it.
The person who sent these plants to me said one is Dutchman’s Pipe but she does not remember which one.
So, which plant is Tinospora cordifolia – 1 or 2 ??

plant no.1

No, …, it’s not Tinospora cordifolia,
Aristolochia macrophylla only, there is clearly leafy stipules also,

Thanks, … for the id.
Pl. post different plants in different mails.
Two plants appears to be different.
1st one is having leafy stipule should be of Aristolochia
We do not have observation of Aristolochia macrophylla so far in efi site, but it looks different as per
I think it is closer to Aristolochia elegans Mast.  as per comparative images at Aristolochia
2nd plant may be of Tinospora cordifolia as per Plant for ID : AVD-1 23042013

Thanks to all who have spared your time for me. I sent two plants because the leaves are very similar. I have one more set of two plants for identification which I will send soon.
