The birds in photographs 1 & 3 are Common Mynas. The bird in photograph 2 is a Jungle Myna.

WOW! Nice pictures
Looks yummy but not edible!
Most of the red fruits in the wild are not edible!

Giloy bel is Tinospora cordifolia, but Amar bel is a parasitic climber commonly known as India Dodder or Giant dodder, botanically Cuscuta reflexa or other species of the genus Cuscuta.

Sir Giloy bel in Ayurveda also known Amrita so confusion may be there sometime

Anatomical differences are available at the following site http://ayurherbs.wordpress.com/guduchi/

“Special characters: This plant appears similar to Tinospora cordifolia in all aspects but distinctly differs in having dense hairs covering all plant parts. Stems have prominent white dot-like structures called lenticels. Fruits are attractive orange-red.‘ from http://envis.frlht.org/tsinensis.htm

I assume hairs are present on leaves of sinensis and not on cordifolia.

Please check this link

Please also check these links

Both species are found in many parts of India..
T. sinensis leaves are hairy as well as bigger in size compare to those of T. glabra

‘auct. non’ means not of the author. Literally meaning, not of the original author but the plant was designated as Tinospora cordifolia. So in a layman’s word Tinospora cordifolia is the original plant
Tinospora cordifolia auct. non is named as such but is not of the same author as above and is a different species which has been named as Tinospora malabarica.
Tinospora malabarica is now Tinospora sinensis by the way.

Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f. & Thomson ??? (Hooghly): The search for the taxon Tinospora gives so many confusing data that i give up trying to ID the attached plant pics. If i could find some red or scarlet colored fruits!

Do you need photo of fruit of Tinospora?
I have them

Thank you very much … for your kind mail. I just wanted to see those fruits in the plant itself so as to get confirm that it is Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f. & Thomson.

Its Tinospora cordifolia (Willd) Miers ex. Hk. f. & Th.

Two species of Tinospora are found in maharashtra, one with Cordate and glabrous leaf and the other one with hairy and bigger leaf.. not cordate.
Leaf cordate, glabrous = Tinospora cordifolia = Tinospora glabra
Leaf not cordate, hairy = Tinospora sinensis = Tinospora malabarica

I think finally i have found fruits of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f. & Thomson. Today i found it at a different place, it was hanging from an overhead power supply line, intertwined with other climbers like Dioscorea pentaphylla L.

These are those pictures from my earlier post which i think is T. cordifolia for stem and endocarp being not tuberculate.

This climber i got some green twigs of from a farm in MP. They said it is a medicinal plant – its decoction being a tonic. They said its effectiveness is more when it grows on a neem tree.

I planted the green twigs into soil and it has grown from that.

The leaf in the picture is about 3 inches wide. The flowers are tiny.

Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers.

Yes Tinospora cordifolia. Gugul

Thank you Sirs for the identification.
I would like to know more about its medicinal value. Is there a reliable guide on the net to check?

Tinospora sinensis (Lour.) Merr.(= T. cordifolia (Willd.) Miers, Fam: Menispermaceae,

medicinal climber with aerial roots, Guduchi, geloy, stem used as a immunostimulant, antipyretic and liver tonic.

It looks like Tinospora cordifolia. Aren’t the leaves glabrous here?

I think The Plant List erroneously listed T. cordifolia as a synonym of T. sinensis. Its source reference Tropicos as well as GRIN treat them separate, not as synonyms.

You are correct …, why it is given like that in plant list? We need to bring their notice.

We have noted several such errors in TPL. TPL database is said to be updated periodically and hope the errors are fixed during the updates. So, it is advisable and safe to check more than one database for correct nomenclature.

Yes … Unfortunately not much has improved in Second version of TPL. It attributes synonymy to TROPICOS, but unfortunately the latter website does not mention any thing about synonymy.

Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook. f. & Thoms., Amrutha valli, (Geloy) stem is used to extract starch, it is a Immunostimulant, anti viral drug used in obstructive jaundice and to control Herpes simplex virus. Producing aerial root is a characteristic feature of T. cordifolia, large quantity of dry stem pieces are consumed in the pharmaceutical industry.

In case if U have few more images/pics, do share, it will help in resolving the ID…. Just a wild guess– this could be Cocculus hirsutus??

Thank you for your reply. I dont have more images to share. But I will try and get more. I am sure that it is certainly not Cocculus hirsutus.

Certainly looks like a Menispermaceae member. I may turn out to be Tinospora cordifolia??

I think … is right. Probably Tinospora sp.
Are the leaves hairy?

Thank you all for the inputs.
I think the data is indeed insufficient to reach the id.

I will try and post more images.

Tinospora cordifolia

Pune

I dont think the gross anatomy matches t cordifolia

As per document http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/4113613

(1) inflorescence of T. crispa not coetaneous with leaves
(2) inflorescence of T. sinensis usually not coetaneous, 3-12 cm long (male); leaves tomentellous below and puberulous above
(3) inflorescence sometimes not coetaneous with the leaves, male inflorescence 2-20 cm long
I agree with …, if mature leaves are glabrous.

Found near Chennai in land along roadside and bushes.
Climber or Vine.
The showers are all over the host tree until the ground.
I think it should be an epiphyte.
Even if we cut the structure it regrows freshly from the cutted place.
The particular flora had taken a teak tree as host at a good height. That’s the reason could not able to catch the leaves, fruits or flowers.

Guduchi small projections : 3 posts by 3 authors.
I had Tinospora Cordifolia at my home for 5 years. But it never grown any projections as  shown in the picture of following link
Such kind of projections were shown by one Ayurveda practicing person to me as well.
When we buy Guduchi stems from market, such projections are available on it many times.

Are there two different species of Tinospora which are with projection and without projection? Or due some climatic conditions  projections are not grown on my plant?

Another species T. malabarica (= Tinospora sinensis (Lour.) Merr.) will produce bigger projections.

I had Tinospora cordifolia at my home for 5 years. But it never grown any projections as  shown in the picture of following link.

Ebay

Such kind of projections were shown by one Ayurveda practicing person to me as well.
When we buy Guduchi stems from market, such projections are available on it many times.
Are there two different species of Tinospora which are with projection and without projection? Or due some climatic conditions  projections are not grown on my plant?

Another species T. malabarica (= Tinospora sinensis (Lour.) Merr.) will produce bigger projections.

I had Tinospora cordifolia, and the one on ebay is Tinospora sinensis.

Many videos of Ayurvedic practitionars or traditional Ayurvedic healers specify one characteristic to identify Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia). Even read in one book about the same character to identify this plant.
Providing the following link which says, Tinospora cordifolia has very delicate skin as bark after certain period of life of plant. If we remove skin, inside there is fleshy stem.
I had Tinospora cordifolia for three years, but never observed such fleshy stem. Stem of my T. cordifolia was not such fleshy. Such kind of skin never seen on it. The characters like leaf veins, flowers, fruit, cross cut section of stem showing tiny holes was matching exactly. But this character of delicate skin and fleshy stem never occurred.
Link to youtube:-
Note that it is free link for all by channel ‘Being Positive’.
Question: Is this the primary identification character of Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) plant?

depends on where you bought the giloy stems? at some ayurveda store? or market vendors who bring herbs and roots. how long after harvesting/procuring from where it was growing… what we see in large cities is quite woody, with outer skin all tightly stuck to the stem itself or flaked off.
yet the cross section would look like a central spot with spokes of wheel type structures going to the periphery
it clearly shows the chakra like structure that doctor in that utube was taking about.
secondly, it also shows that the skin is paper thin and flaking.

hope this helped

Thanks … Took a look at all pictures of Tinospora c. in our site, but did not see such delicate skin on any of the bark. Another point is, the cross section of stem at my home had ‘Charkrika’ exactly as that of  this link is from flickr, picture by Subhada Nikharge.

Yes i also seen with hard stem with no delicate removable skin. Wandering about the importance of delicate skin as identification character. Will be glad if someone studying traditional medicine on our group also clarify these facts.

Tinospora cordifolia :: Puducherry :: 15 OCT 19 : 6 posts by 3 authors.
Puducherry  near sea coast
Date: October 15, 2019 … Altitude range: about 0 – 3 m (0 – 10 feet) asl
Tinospora cordifolia  (Willd.) Miers

Yet to see flowering.

Thank you very much, …
If you notice, they are easy to miss, because the inflorescence is almost green to lemon in colour – gets mixed up in the foliage. But it shows up strikingly when it flowers on very old seasoned (woody) stem, usually devoid of leaves.

yes, the flower buds. did you see any of the red berries?

Thanks, … No, it was not yet fruiting at that place.

Help with identification- probably Smilacaceae family?- 170421AS01: 4 images.
Need help in identifying this climber.
A woody climber with multiple red colour berries. The unripe berries were green in colour, the stem had slight depressions in and was speckled, it was growing in the wild.  Bhopal near Van Vihar. There were quite a few of these growing in the area, and saw it in fruit today (17th April). Climber that was growing along with other climbers on wrightia tinctoria and bamboo. It was found in a rocky area and the roots had managed to grow in cracks and crevices.
