A very distinctive annual herb up to 40 cm tall with basal rosette of spatulate and pinnatifid leaves up to 12 cm long with few teeth or lobes, leaf base narrowed to winged stalk; stems slender, branched, hairy especially in upper part, leafless and appearing like scapes; heads yellow, ligulate, 15-20 mm in diam., ligules 5-toothed; inner involucre bracts 8-10, linear, pubescent, 8-10 mm long, with hyaline margin, erect, outer few, small, spreading; achenes linear, narrowed at both ends, reddish when mature, without beak, 3-5 mm long; pappus of simple hairs, soft, white, nearly as long as achene body.
Commonest weed in May-June in wastelands and borders of cultivated fields.
