Herbs, about 30-60 cm tall. Stems erect, terete, nodes distant near the becoming closer towards the apex, glabrous. Leaves alternate, ovate-oblong to narrow oblanceolate, about 3-6 x 0.8-2 cm across, base cuneate or long attenuate, margins subentire or shallow crenate with few filiform appendages about 1 mm long, apex long acuminate, lateral veins about 14-18 on either side of the midrib, chartaceous, green above and paler whitish beneath, minutely pubescent both above and beneath, petiole slender, about 1.5-4.5 cm long, stipule glands digitate, about 2 mm long. Inflorescence resupinate, axillary, 2-4 flowered clusters, peduncles about 2-4 mm long, glabrous. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic,about 3-3.5 cm across, pedicel slender, about 1.5-2.5 cm long, sepals 3, imbricate, 2 lateral ones flat, small, linear, apex apiculate, glabrous, about 2-3 mm long, posterior sepal (Lip) large, petaloid, bucciniform, about 7-9 mm long, spurred, spur filiform, abruptly constricted, about 1.5-2 cm long, upper standard petal, obovate, hoodlike on the back, about 6-7 mm long, lateral ones (wings or alae), fused in pairs, bilobed, about 1 cm long, reddish. Stamens 5, anthers bi-locular. Ovary 5 locular. Fruit indehiscent, capsule, narrow fusiform, about 0.8-1.4 x 0.3-0.5 cm across, swollen in the middle, loculicidally dehiscing by 5 valves, glabrous.

This one is most probably I. tripetala, as flowers are in fascicles. Frontal view of flower could help.

In my opinion, neither this specimen by … nor the specimen by … from Mizoram are Impatiens tripetala. I have attached the description from Flora of British India, and underlined the portion describing the lip and spur. The spur cannot be called short in any of the two specimens. I have also attached the picture of lectotype of Impatiens tripetala from Phytotaxa 288 (2): 193–196 (2016). Neither of the two specimens appear close to it.

Unfortunately at the moment I don’t have enough time and resources to dig deeper.
I am still working in the field and I also got several interesting, but time consuming requests dealing with balsams.
This way problem I. tripetala or no need to wait for more time and this could be somewhere in winter…
I will try to resolve simple cases in meantime.

Compared with other images in Net and FoI it does not look like I. tripetala. Any opinion please ?

This is a very intriguing Impatiens species to me. North-East India is full of little explored Balsams. This could be a little known one, or a completely new one! I will be very much interested in its identity
