Trees, 25-30 m tall. Bark grey, peeling off horizontally in narrow rolls, Branchlets densely white villous and resinous glandular. Leaves simple, alternate; stipules ca. 7 mm long, lanceolate; petiole ca. 1-4 cm. long, densely villous and glandular punctate; lamina ca. 3-12 x 1.3-5.5 cm, ovate-lanceolate, or ovate-elliptic, rounded at base, cuspidate-acuminate at apex, margin irregularly incurved setiform serrate, chartaceous, pubescent beneath when young, with resinous scales when mature; secondary nerves 7-11 pairs. Male catkins ca. 5-12 cm long; stamens hairy. Female inflorescences 3-5 in a raceme, ca. 5-10 cm × 4-6 mm when mature, pendulous, narrowly cylindric; peduncle ca. 2-3 mm, densely yellow villous; bracts ca. 3 mm, densely pubescent and ciliolate, becoming spongy at base, 3-lobed, middle lobe oblong or obtuse, lateral lobes reduced, auriculate. Fruiting spikes ca. 5-7 cm long,
