Small trees; height 10 m; bark grey; branchlets stout, lenticellate, pale brown, younger parts softy hairy. Leaves simple, alternate; petiole 6-15 mm long, slender, glabrous; lamina 5.5-9 x 2-3.5 cm, elliptic-oblong, oblanceolate or obovate; base cuneate; apex obtuse; margin entire, coriaceous, scabrous; lateral nerves 5-7 pairs, pinnate, prominent, slender; intercostae reticulate. Flowers in terminal or axillary corymbose, 1 cm, white; calyx tube 1.5 mm, lobes 1 mm; stamens 5, filaments 1 m long; ovary 4-celled; style bifid, short; stigma minute. This Shrub was spotted growing in the wild near Pune. I could spot only few flowers. Shrub was in fruiting stage. Fruits were round, orange coloured, around 6mm. Leaves were Hairy.

Yes, this doesn’t seem to be Ehretia laevis because the fruits are not 2-lobed. Likely to be Ehretia aspera. the acuminate apex and leaves size also support to the Ehretia aspera Ehretia aspera Pune:

Ehretia aspera. Vetal tekdi Pune. A shrub rather than a tree. Leaves rougher than those of E.laevis. Flowers in scorpioid cymes. The pictures with fruits show the classicle scopioid inflorescence characteristic of the family. Somehow I couldn’t find clear pictures of the leaves. Will post them when I get it. Found in Vandalur Hills -Chennai.

The forest I go has trees with almost same size every where green. I think that’s why I am confusing with different species. Sorry for confusion. Not Ehretia cymosa Thonn. ?. Minute white flowers in inflorescence on the ends of branches (in the 5th picture you can see a small ant in the inflorescence for scale). new leaves lighter green and more hairy. mature leaves 6-7 cm long. I checked Trees of Andhra Pradesh by T. Pullaiah and Sandhya Rani pg 356, where both are described as different species. The flowers of this plant seem to me different from those of Ehretia laevis as shown on the flowers of india website. Thanks, …,
